Temporary import extension in central america?
 

I am currently in El Salvador after spending a month and a half in Guatemala. The amount of days was not renewed for my temporary import for the bike when I got to El Salvador. I now have 60 days for Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua but I intend to spend more time than that with the bike. I know that I can get my visa extended but wondering if I can for the temporary import too. Or will I need to leave the four countries in order to avoid big fines? Any info would help, trying to decide if I have time to make it to Honduras or if I need to jet south.

I have a question related to this thread: I had an accident here in Guatemala last week and am returning tomorrow to the US for some medical care and a vacation from my trip.

However, I´m returning to Guatemala in 6 weeks, 4 days AFTER my vehicle import permit expires. I went to SAT (the part of the government that can give me an extension) and I need to be in the country for the next 7-15 days so that I can sign paperwork to receive the extension. This isn´t possible. So, when I return to Guatemala and hit the border with Mexico about 10 days after my import permit expires, will I just have to pay a small fine? From the research I did, it looks like it was between Q2.00 and Q6.00 per day. Anyone know for sure?

You could give somebody a "CARTA DE PODER" (power of attorney) in order to sign all the paperwork at SAT .
Once your permit is expired , there is no fine ; then you have to pay the import duties .
If you are not planing of coming back to Guatemala later on , you could just ride off to Mexico , without stoping at Aduanas at the border . The best border would be be at Bethel-Frontera Corozal (rivercrossing) because there is only a Migracion office , but no Aduanas at all .

I think this is my current plan. However, where would I import the bike back into Mexico? Would I just need to go to the closest Aduana in Mexico to get my paperwork?

Couple of days ago we got a rider with the same problem out of the country this way : he crossed into Mexico at Gracias a Dios , a really small border (just Migracion there , no Aduana) near the Lagunas de Montebello , then he road back to La Mesilla(70KM) and got his mexican TVIP .
But keep in mind ,i f you ever come back with any vehicle to Guatemala , you will have a problem .
