Shops with 17 inch tires in Central America

Before my trip began, one of my concerns was where I would be able to find 17" tires. I´m going to add to this list as my trip goes on and I hope that others can contribute to create a sizeable list.

I picked up a Brazilian tire 120/90-17 similar to a Pirelli MT-60 for $65 USD. They had 3 different models and another in 130/90-17. 17 inch tire tubes also available.

Not Central America, but they stocked the 17 inch tire for my 2001 F650. Cuenca is the hubb for motorcyclists in Equador and this shop has the widest variety of parts for the major brands BMW, KTM, Kawasaki, Suzuki, and Honda.

hi, I had a service done in guatamala city at bmw and san jose costa rica bmwand theres a good place in la paz bolivia that got me out of a crunch, its the honda / kawassaki dealer , he had a fewsets of half used for my r12gsa last feb.

There is quite a good BMW rider community in Guate. City, maybe contact them for ideas on finding tires? Should be able to find both 150/17 (GS)

Tires in Guatemala City aren't only available, but they are also cheap. Aside from BMW of Guatemala there are two others that I called yesterday who had 17" rears and 19 or 21" fronts. Guate is a fully modern city where you can get absolutely anything you need. Well, I can't seem to find a small drybag.. but almost anything.

Just ask to speak to someone who speaks english, as all 3 shops have someone who speaks english very well.

My new tire set (Tourances!) are being installed today at BMW.

With a couple of days notice, I think you can get anything you want for your bike or riding gear in Guatemala City. Zona 9 is where all the moto shops are located(well, bmw is in zona 4, which is right next to 4).

I have the GPS coordinates of BMW on the bike if someone needs it. Guate is a bitch to get around at first, but once you figure out how to read the addresses and understand where the zones are, it is actually quite easy and extremely regular.

A good source of tires in Guatemala city is a business going by the name of FPK at 7Av 8-08 Zona 4. It is easy to find as they are located right near the Eiffel-like tower straddling the street.
FPK are a big supplier of replacement automotive and motorcycle parts and electronics in general. They have a good stock of many tire brands and sizes and at good prices. They only sell the tires but have an arrangement with a Yamaha dealer across the street where they will install them on short notice for a small fee if you bring in the tire and bike.
All over Guatemala you can find small motorcycle and parts shops who sell tires for the common small utilitarian motorcycles. These might have one in stock for you but will be able to order in the tire you need . Be patient to wait a day or two while it comes from Guate.

I found 17" tire at Rivas, just by the Costa Rican boarder.
The mechanic (not motorcycle sotore) located on the left side of the main road if you are heading south, just before the end of the town.
The tire cost 70$ and it is not a familier brand but looks fine.

There is an ATV shop in Panama city that have 17" tyres, maybe youll have luck and it will be offroad...

I found a fantastic wee shop in San Miguel de Allende, about 240kms north of Mexico City.
Alberto couldn't be more helpful and friendly and he had 4 different 17s in when I was there. Pirelli, Metz, Avon and maxxis. I bought an MT60 130/80 x17 for 1400 pesos which is roughly £70. He also let me change my oil on my Aprilia Pegaso (he had lots of filters) and service the bike in the workshop.
He has ridden the length of the Americas many times on old flat twin beemers and will go out of his way to help.
His shop is called "Motos y Mas" and is really easy to find on the ring road opposite the MEGA supermarket.
Call him in advance, he has great English, and he'll get anything you need. 415 152 6733.

I've just managed to negotiate Guatemala City without a map and come home with a pair of tyres for my F650 GS Dakar. Yes I am pleased with myself!

I found that most of the motorcycle stores, and there are lots, were on 7 Av Zona 4. They tend to cater for smaller motorcycles and the tyres they had I think were Zenda, or something like that. Anyway they were cheap and Chinese (nothing against the Chinese) and whilst I'm not too fussy I was looking for one of the major brands.

FPK has been mentioned in previous posts but whilst they had a small stock of tyres they were mostly Dunlop.

I eventually made it to Bavaria motors, Guatemala City's BMW showroom, and they directed me to to ComAuto directly opposite them. I managed to pick up a pair of TKC80 tyres; front 21" $100, rear 17" $200, both in stock. I got my front tyre fitted for me back in Antigua for Q20, about $3

I should mention that I've just managed to get over 15,000 miles out of my front TKC80 tyre.

Incidently I'm sure I read on a previous post that Bavaria motors is on 8a Avienda, that street doesn't exist, they are on 6a Avienda too.
