San Ignacio to honduras
 

Hello

Just wondering if anyone has some suggestions of a route to take from Belize through Guatemala into Honduras.
I am in Chetumal today heading into Belize. Plan on spending a few days in San Ignacio and then heading into Guatemala.
Any comments would be appreciated(routes, road conditions, where to stay, things to do along the way, etc.).

Get yer money's worth in Belize- you will have to pay the $30BZ exit tax regardless of the length of your stay. So give the entire paved road network of the country a going over.
Check out Mayan ruins of Altun Ha in the north and Caracol and Xunantunich both from a base in Cayo.*|(San Ignacio)
But first zip down the scenic Hummingbird Highway to Dangriga and then to Punta Gorda on the Southern Highway , then turn around and go to Cayo.
Good cheap places to stay are Sea Guesthouse in BZ City, Chaleanor Hotel ECONOMY rooms, in Dangriga , Hotel Lux in Pta Gorda, Max's Place Guesthouse in Cayo.

The route to Honduras is up to you but you have several possible- Whichever you like thru Guatemala from Tikal thru Sayxche and Coban or Tikal south to Rio Dulce.
North coast route from Entre Rios GT to Corinto HOnduras , then to Pto Cortes and San Pedro Sula -- excellent new road.But get your GT exit paperwork done first in Pto Barios at the SAT office. If you spend a night in Pto Barios check out Hotel Henry Beresford just south of city center on CA 9 entry highway from south.
Or go in via the Florido Copan crossing .

Everyone has their favorites along this route.

Pat is right , you may not camp in the ruins site , that is off limits after dark , but there is a good supervised(somewhat) camping area south of the tourist parking lot south of the 3 motels and east of the Museum/welcome center The lights are usually without power in the toilet/shower block so bring a flashlight.
A park ranger comes around to collect the small fee

We ended up going to San Ignacio Belize. I got in touch with Andy(belizeoffroadtours(at)gmail.com) from Belize-Motors Off-road Adventure Tours and Rentals. He actually booked a room for us before arriving in San Ignacio, so we did not have to worry about finding a place when we arrived in town. We ended up going on one of the tours with Andy. It was an excellent way to see Belize. We canoed into a cave, saw some waterfalls and plenty of nature all while riding on Yamaha dirt bikes. Lunch, a snack and a beer at the end of the day were all included. We also had a nice swim at the base of one of the waterfalls. Thanks Andy for the experience.

The next day we crossed into Guatemala and went up to the Tikal ruins. We were able to camp at the Jaguar Inn just beside the parking lot.
