Routes Into Mexico

Hi All
We Are Currently In Austin Texas & Looking For The Best & Safest Route Into Mexico Taking Into Account The Recent Troubles. Any Ideas?

Lonesome George 4 Nov 2010 03:59

If you arrive early in the morning (8 a.m.) any crossing should be OK. As long as you give yourself time to get away from the border. I crossed at Tijuana a few weeks ago and it was absolutley fine. And then later that day I hear that 13 people were shot dead in a drug rehab. centre in Tijuana. But I didn't witness any of that, just frienly and helpful Mexicans.

Arrive early, organsied with all your paperwork and a fairly good idea of what you're expected to do/get stamped, and it will be fine - Unless of course your refering to some specific trouble I've not heard about!?...

Great name by the way...

The dangers are blown out of proportion and are extremely unlikely to affect you. My personal belief is that you stand a greater chance of being mugged in a large US city than having something happen to you while riding in Mexico. As Lonesome George said, cross early and put some distance between you and the border.

I went all over Mexico April and May (crossed at Agua Prieta and just outside of Ciudad Juarez) and had absolutely no problems with crime or even any hints of danger.

As long as you don't drop too much acid and don't show your gay biker affection too openly you should be fine.

Presidio

Easy crossing, Rialta Inn Motel on the 67 is good to stop off at.

Use HWY90, 118,170 to get there.

Once across, easy 1 day ride to Cuauhtemoc on the 16.

I posted a run down of it in the North American Forum.

An update, I just crossed Presidio again this time into Mexico, I camped at Solius in Big Bend, and rode river rd out and didn't get to Presidio till midday, did the crossing, just had to walk in to the US side hand in my exit visa, jump on the bike ride about 100m and stop at the mexican border, I already had my tourist visa and TVIP so they wanted to just check the VIN and I was off (well there is a boom gate and when the light goes red you must stop in a parking bay on the right imediately after the gate, I didn't just rode through slowly waiting for someone to say something but nothing, I stopped 200m down the road to put headphones in and as I did a Customs car with lights flashing pulled up behind me, no dramas just followed him back and had a look through my stuff)

There is everything at the border but they wont tell you, just stop and go and ask, as there is a aduanda about 30k's out of town and they'll send you back if you don't have all the paperwork

I'll be in Batopilas today (made it to Creel from Big Bend long ride) I'll let you know about the road to Choix in a few days

Was good to meet you and your wife in Austin hope the shock swap worked
