Road to Coban in Guatemala

Hi Ho riders

Does anyone know if the road from Honduras to Guatemala to Coban detouring past Guatemala City, is sealed. With pillions banned in the city, we are obviously making a detour.

Cheers
Julie

Hi Julie ,
there are 3 different ways to enter Guatemala from Honduras .
1) Agua Caliente , Esquipulas
2) El Florido , Copan Ruins
3) El Cincho , Puerto Cortez
From each one of these borders you have a paved road all the way to CA9 , and from ther you take the CA14 to Coban .
If you need any more information or assistance PM me .
Ride safe ,
Julio

pillions

No worries about pillion in Guat city, its new, not enforced, and if you are on a foreign registered bike it doesnt even apply
all the borders were crossable 2 weeks ago
do it!

Thanks guys, thats great. Can you tell me what is the best border crossing in these two countries at all...to get from Mex to Guat , we are heading up to Tikal area and from Guat to Hond. We were thinking Chetumal into Mesilla and then El FLorido into ??
Any thoughts?

Cheers
Jules

If you are at Chetumal the most logical route would be to go via Belize. Enter at Subteniente Lopez just 15km west of Chetumal , tour the Northern and Western Highways to the GT border of Melchor de Mencos, then west with maybe a nice visit to Tikal before carrying on to Coban via Sayaxche. Except for the first 24km into Guatemala, supposedly now being prepped for final rebuild into pavement, the rest are all good paved roads .

Actually Sjoerd, I was wrong, not through Chetumal, but through Palenque, apologies. that was too far North.... any thoughts?

From Palenque you have several choices, the closest paved road land crossing is via El Ceibo, southeast of Tenosique. But there is a problem her e because the GT side does not( yet) have full customs facility to import temporarily your bike. They do give out the personal permit and say that is all you need . Not. However you can do this route with minor effort , and all paved to Coban via Sayaxche, if you make it a point to exit GT at Florido Copan into Honduras. I did a post on this back in April, see full details there. The folks at that exit are always very accomodating to tourists, just explain why you could not get the temp import. ( Or you could go to th e bother of finding an SAT office in GT to do the papers,)
Other choice from Palenque is take Mex 307 south along the Rio Usumacinta and do the struggle crossing by launch to Guatemala from Frontera Corozal or Benemerito de las Americas ( too much hassel for my tastes and limited aduana etc facilities)
Third option is to cross over clandestinely into GT from Mex 307 at the gravel access road to Playa Grande GT (no aduana for anything,Mex and GT)
Best bet tere after is to go all the way to Cd Cuauhtemoc / La Mesilla crossing on the Pan am highway Mex 190, full service crossing.Trav el south and east on this excellent highway to Huehuetenango and from there go east on RN7W to San Cristobal Verapaz and join CA 14 for the last 30km to Coban.

Coban, Guatemala

Many years ago, the last time I was in GT, I went to a pageant at Coban. Women and musicians came from all over GT to show their indigenous costumes and music. There was judging.

Is this festival still happening every year. If so, when does it take place. I'd love to see it again as I'm heading South from Los Angeles next month.
