Riding partner for southern mex and guatamala

Hi
Im riding solo in southern Mexico and was wondering who else is down here and interested in riding a couple days together. Am especially interested in crossing guatamala border with others since I hear crossing alone not a good idea. Also any tips on roads to ride and places to see are welcome!
cheers!

Last month Barb and I crossed from Mexico to Guatemala at La Mesilla. It was a very easy process and I never felt a security threat. La Mesilla is at the southern end of the road from San Cristobal de las Casas. From La Mesilla to Huehuetenango the road was good except for some brief traffic. Between Huehuetanango and Lake Atitlan we had one almost-run-in with banditos (luckily we weren't the target. They were after a truck or perhaps police guarding the truck. We got to see drawn weapons!). Locals at Lake Atitlan said that banditos had held up several buses and many cars between Lake Atitlan and Guatemala City in December and early January. I took the long way and had no problems. A day later Barb rode the shorter route (supposedly bandito-filled) from Lake Atitlan to Guatemala City and she had no problems. Apparently the banditos usually prefer to rob rich-looking vehicles and tour buses. Motorcycles are usually ok. Don't ride at night.

Lake Atitlan is worth seeing. It has a nice hostel "La Iguana."

I think a riding partner is a good idea just because of how poor the country is. If you can not find one easily I would not let that stop you. Just play it extra safe about when and where you ride.

I met an Australian motorcyclist who said he was ambushed by a guy with a machine gun while riding through the Guatemalan jungle. It is probably a 1 in a million chance but be careful.

Hey Dirtgirl,

where are you now? We're two guys who rode from Southern California through Mexico and are now in Guatemala City. We plan to go to Honduras tomorrow.
