Jacob Sherman, of http://www.motorcycleramblings.com had been on the road for four months. He took off from Brooklyn in May, headed up to Alaska, and was on his way to Argentina. He's been crashing on riders' couches along the way. I offered mine up and had the honor him staying with me for four days, sorting gear, working on his bike, etc. Sunday, I rode to Ensenada with him, had lunch, wished him luck, and we parted ways. He would spend the night there, and head to Mike's Sky Ranch or possibly San Felipe the next day. He made it to Mike's.

On his way out, yesterday morning, he dropped his bike and broke his leg in three places. Fortunately, a couple of good samaritans driving behind him got him and all his luggage back across the border. He's in Sharp Memorial. He goes into surgery (titanium installation) today at 1.

Only problem is, his bike's still sitting there (if we're lucky) , 4.1 miles down the dirt road on the way to Mike's, off Mex 3. Fork's locked over, and he has a padlock on it.

I'm BURIED at work and can't get down there--and I have no clue what to do about his bike. It is insured, but aside from that, I don't know what I can do to help. One thing I can do is post here. If you experienced Baja guys know what to do, or who to contact, let me know. You'd be helping me out, and a hard core ADV rider who needs it.

Sad to say, I seriously doubt that bike is still there.

The guys at Mike's Sky Rancho should have been contacted before they
left the bike. Someone from Mike's could have retrieved it and kept it safe at
the Rancho until someone could pick it up.

It would be worth a call to Mike's to find out if they can help.

They may have a web site, and I know they have a phone there. You can
actually call for reservations. Don't know phone number or web address.
I will try to find it and re-post here unless someone knows this info.

In the grand scheme, the bike means nothing. I learned this when my new
$10,000 motorcycle was destroyed in an accident. My medical bills ended up
being $190,000 in 1997. Today that figure would be tripled thanks to HMO
and corporate greed.

Lets hope the surgeons do it right the first time (my leg took 3 trys).
If the bikes there, great, if not.....oh well.

Get well quick Jacob. If I hear your panniers broke your leg, I´m going to throw mine away and get soft bags, as I have heard too many of these stories. Jacob and I were hoping to get together for some of our trips south, as I am currently in Guatemala, headed for Tierra del Fuego. I guess not this time.

The guys who brought him back called me last night and said they were heading back across for the bike this morning.

Now, I gotta work on finding Jacob a place to rehab here in SD in case he needs it.

BTW, I gots (that's right GOTS, it's a NY thing) to thinking, we in the Land Rover community have a Birmabright yahoo page were we list our address and phone numbers in case anyone breaks down in out neck of the woods. Can something like this be added to this site (with some security of course)? Just a thought.

I hope they have some luck finding Jacob's bike. I would have them talk to
the guys at Mike's Sky Rancho first and see what they suggest doing. They know everyone at every Rancho in the area.

Sometimes a cash reward can work wonders at unearthing a missing bike.
Probably between $300 and $500 Cash. Show them the money but do not hand any over in front.

If the police get involved the only thing that will bring results will be the promise of CASH. Just the way things work there. Show them the money....but do NOT give them any until the bike is returned. Deal with only the Jefe, or you will end up having to pay everyone in that office.

I'm hoping the guys at Mike's can help resolve this easily with no cost. Its really in their own best interest to do so as stolen bike stories won't help their business.

Thanks for all the support. I have found some limited internet access in the hotel. The first person to call visit me walked in wearing a HU shirt. The nurses were pretty amazed that there was such a website and that total strangers were coming to visit me. So, again, I thank all of you for the support.

The bike was recovered by the people who were behind me when I crashed, hid e the bike, took me an Ensenada hospital and then insisted to take me to San Diego when they saw the extent of my injury. They were more worried about the bike than I was and when they couldn't get an extra day off the decided to go it one day. I am still stunned by these guys and I hope they will eventually read this because they now know about HU.

I was actuallly not too worried about the bike. For one thing, compared to my injury it was a minor issue and I really didn't think anyone would see the bike or even want the bike. Maybe this is the same naivite that allowed me to ride all the way to Mike's Sky Ranch. This is really a trail bike ride or only for people very experienced. There are a couple of other stories that happen one the way up- like my first crash- and a robbery in Ensenada the day before. Oh, I did remember to take pictures, of course

Oh man! Jacob, very sorry to read about this … best wishes for a speedy recovery. Hope the same good news follows for the leg as for the bike.

I tried calling the hospital last night but the phone rang and rang.... you probably had all the nurses in your room comforting you!!! hahaha

Jacob will be discharged tomorrow (Sat), and he's looking for a place to stay in San Diego for a few days so he can check in with his doctor at Sharp. I'd offer up my place, but I've family in town for the next two weeks, and I live on a second floor.

If anyone in the San Diego area could help a brother rider out, it would be much appreciated. Jacob spent five days with me before he went into Mexico, and I can assure you, he's as unobtrusive as they come. Plus, he needs our help.
