Real de catorce route from the south
 

Hello fellow riders,
In about a month I'm going to be heading to El Bajio (Guanajuato) from California and on the way back I want to see Real de Catorce in San Luis Potosi. Can somebody tell me the best route to get to that town from the south? I'll be coming from San Miguel de Allende to be specific.
Most important, how good or bad is the road once you leave pavement and the conditions of the roads in catorce in general.
I ride a heavy bike and dont want to venture into very challenging dirt roads. My experience is limited on that.
If you can recomend a decent hotel for motorcycle riders would be even better.

From SMA simply make your way to San Luis Potosí where
you can choose from two routes to Real de 14
Either stay on Mex 57 north to Matehuala( hotels) , a very busy major highway. A bit north of Matehuala turn west on Mex 62 and past Cedral ( hotels)you come to the exit to Real....
OR. ... for a more relaxed highway from SLP
... take Mex 49 northwest and after 30km turn north to Charcas( hotels) and about 30km north of that town turn north on the paved highway which parallels the railway to Estacion Catorce and Vanegas. At Vanegas turn east on Mex 62 and follow the signs at the turnoff south to Real de 14.This last 24km will be the toughest ( ooooh ) as it is paved with bumpy cobblestones . And you have to wait your turn at the tunnel into town.

Beautiful and easy ride ! I did it 2 up on a heavy bike and no problems at all; just watch out for the cobblestones when they are wet

Bumpy and slippery cobblestones, especially in the tunnel. This aside, no problem.

There's a really nice, steeper and rougher road in from the west through the plantations. It's on any good map.
