Pls help US to Mexico Border crossing San Diego
 

Hi,

after my todays expierience in not getting the valid export documents from US customs - can somebody explain to me in detail where and how to get the mexican temporary import documents in on the border of San Diego / Tijuana.
I already got the tourist visa - so I only need to get the motorbike permit. How ist that called in spanish? permiso de moto?
The office to get that ist the Banjercito, right?
Does anybody know the opening hours? Is it open on sundays? Where to lock that up?

If you are from the states headed south in Baja there is another Banjercito office in La Paz. You are allowed to travel freely in Baja without the import permit (if you have a US registered bike).

Lucky ,as it is now already Teusday you have probably resolved the problem by now , but in case not here is my suggestion.

As a German with a bike imported into the USA you need to first get the USA side of the problem resolved at the US side of the border. Once you have the clearance to get the bike out of California you can just ride into Mexico for the entire Baja peninsula .I do not know if the US will demand that you get out of the country right then, so be prepared and have all your goods on the bike ready to go into Mexico
The Mexican border terminal at Tijuana is quite confusing with all the traffic lanes looping around but there are signs posted which direct you to MIGRACION and IMPORTACION TEMPORAL DE VEHICULOS.
Follow those and you will get to the required offices to do the processing.
But it may be simpler for you to try the Otay Mesa crossing again.The entire Baja peninsula is considered frontier zone and you do not needthe Mexican temporary import permit for that region and they really don't care much if you do or do not have the Tourist Card either so you are really at liberty to ride down all the way to La Paz and get both at the ferry dock offices at Pichilingue.
You will not be allowed onto the ferry to the mainland until you have these documents paid for and in your passport folder.
Sometimes there is an office for these things open at the stateline between the two Baja states, at Guerrero Negro, but no big deal if it is not there.
You will have to pay by credit card for the Tourist Card and for the Temporary Import Permit (TVIP). These two fees are a permanent cost to you. In addition you will have to pay by CREDIT CARD a security deposit which can be a s high as 400 US dollars dependig on the age of your vehicle. This security deposit is REFUNDABLE , you will get your money back when you cancel the TVIP . You must cancel the TVIP on or before the date it expires ( 6 months) and have the bike right there so they can verify the vin .If you are late trying to cancel you loose the deposit money.
Since you are heading for South America you will have to make a point of cancelling the TVIP when you leave Mexico for Guatemala or Belize. Do not forget , they will not actively seek you out to remind you of this.
Pay by credit card. If you do not then you will have to hand over in paper money the amounts for the two documents AND the security deposit must be in US dollars cash.

I made it on monday thru the Tecate / Otay Mesa border crossing.
There a two thinks to watch out for.

1. You have to clear your customs document (which I needed cause I have a Visa for the US) with US Immigration.
The US Immigration office is at the End of the footbridge where the people come out from mexico to the US.
Don't get shocked or afraid by all the people - just walk in where they do come out - when you are before the US customs checkpoint - just before - turn right at the not named - not signed office - that's the US Immigration office - where you can leave your US customs form or Visa Waiver thing.

2. To clear the temporary import document (so to say to export your bike) you have to go to the US export office. This is as hard to find as the immigration office, maybe even harder.
Hit the Highway Exit - where it says no return to USA (an no return it is) - and go very slow. Just before you the mexican officers - where it says line "nothing to declare" and "to declare" - this is at the end of the footbridge, where people leaving the US, heading to mexico come out, just before mexico- immediately head right - there is a small gate (on car wide) - with an US customs officer - give them the export form - or if you do not have one - as I did - he directs you to a other office some meters away - where the chief officer will take care of you.

All in all took me 3-4hours on monday to clear the US customs - and 15mins to clear the mexican "permito de vehiculo"
