Doesn't smell good. I'll be there 2-up exacly in may.

Anyone knows if this law also applyes for gringos on lardy arse motos who just are passing by too? Any special permits now required at the border?

HI: There have been some threads on this matter. One is in this section on HU, on page one. Another can be found on Adventure Riders in the Regional forum for Latin America. The US Embassy said they will issue a "Warden's Report" once they can sort out the new law. If you go to their web site, they have a section entitled "Warden's Report." Hopefully, the Embassy willl dicuss the possibility of a "Transit Permit" for travelers going thru Guatemala. That is a subject that they are looking into. If you go to the other threads there is an address to the Citizens Section of the US Guatemalan Embassy. You can write and encourage their prompt and positive action on this matter with their Guatemala counterparts. It was our intentions to head in that direction this September.

I have seen conflicting reports. Some say no passengers, others have said, "No adult male passengers." My guess is gringos will not be hassled unless a cop is looking for a soborno.

You are Kidding

Is this for real? Does anyone know if this is being enforced?

It Is in efect.
Look into it at Thousands of newspapers on the Net
pick Central America, Guatemala and the newspaper La Hora which today carried a story in the section "Al Cierre"of how some 129 riders were ticketed for carrying a passenger

wow thats amazing how you can drive around with three or four killers in a car but cant give a mate a backy home on your bike, i can't wait for the uk gov to adopt this dumb ass law :9898:

After re-eading the story in the cited newspaper , date 11 May, the details emerge that it appears this law is only being enforced in 8 municipios which are part of the greater Guatemala City area where the problem of crimes committed by motorcycle riding thugs was the reason for this law in the first place.
.People from outlyng parts of the country are riding in two up and getting stopped to be told that they are infractors, that they need to wear acertain coloured vest or to get their license plate visible or maybe get a fine.

I was emailing with my friend from guatemala city and he confirmed that it is only for the city. He recommended just driving around on CA-2 through esquintla to avoid the 2up law.
