Panama to Columbia or Ecuador
 

Hi folks,
we know, that there must be many posts about this, so please forgive us, that we ask the same question as others...
But we´re on the road and don´t have much time to search threads...
We´re in the USA, will go up to Canada and Alaska and then all the way down at the coast to South America.
We´d like to know, what´s the best way to go from Central to South America - because of safety and costs. Which country, by boat or plane?
We look forward to get advices, comments,...

Long story short: My bike and I flew from Panama City to Bogota for $450usd in January, 2006. I used Girag and they were great. They charge $600usd to fly to Quito. Simply ride your bikes to the cargo area and ask for Girag. There were no Girag signs in sight when I was there, this might have changed. From Panama City, just ride to the airport, once you're there the cargo area is well marked and easy to find. You check in at the front office for the paperwork (should be a woman named Barbara there, she speaks great English), weigh the bikes and drain some fuel. If you're going to Bogota, there is a petrol station several hundred meters from Girag (near the cargo terminal at Bogota airport). Just ask the Girag folks where it is (if you're walking, exit the parking lot, turn left and walk up the one-way street for 200/300 meters or so). If you have time to sail from Colon to Cartagena, I hear this is highly recommended. Have fun!
