Mexico Bound, Crossing at Laredo?
Hello,

my wife and I are travelling from our home in Calgary, Canada on our old F650GSes to Argentina, we've covered about 13,000 km thus far and are hoping to cross in to Mexico early next week. We're currently in Austin, Tx and were thinking about crossing into Mexico at Laredo, Tx. We'd like to get your insight on if this is a good crossing point or if you'd recommend somewhere else in the area.

Once we cross the boarder, we plan on covering some ground, but don't have any place in particular as a goal for day 1.

A lot of riders are recommending the Pharr crossing.
Are you planning on coming down the coast highway Mex #180?
If so, I can help you out. I live in Veracruz let me know if you
need anything. It is the last week's of summer vacation here in Mexico
and the highways are going to be a little busier than normal. It is also the "canicula" weather period with the hottest heat index "real feel" temps of the year right now. You'll be getting heavier rains the farther south you go.
I can recommend someone for Guatemala advice if you need it.
I am a fellow Canuck ex-pat with close to two decades of permanent resident and rider in Mexico.

From Austin you have a list of good border crossings to choose from, each as good as any other. Laredo downtown is okay unless you despise city riding ,.T he crossing west of town at Colombia is very quiet in an industrial zone in the country but then you would still wind up tracking eastish a bit to hook up with Mex 85 on south side of Laredo in order to goto Monterrey.
However from Colombia you can also take the highway NL1 west and that turns into Coah 1 to Anahuac and the nice ride south to Monterrey if you wish.
Another easy crossing , no farther from Austin than Laredo , is Eagle Pass to Piedras Negras . You can just ride in and through town with no customs to bother with because that is all done at the big checkpoint at Allende on Mex 57,km 53 , which is also a good place to spend a night. From there you can carry on south to Monclova and Saltillo on Mex 57 or you can turn onto Mex 53to slash southeast between the mountains to get to Monterrey

Thank you for your suggestions, we've done some reading and looks like we'll try crossing at Eagle Pass on Monday or Tuesday, we're very excited about getting to Mexico.

We've been on the road since June 15th and have been having a great time, however it feels like the adventure is really about to begin.

Thanks for asking and thanks for responding. I'm also leaving from Austin next month and have found the suggestions very helpful. I'm thinking Eagle Pass may be the route for me as well.

We ended up crossing from Laredo on a Thursday morning, it all went very smoothly and we spent the 1st night in Saltillo. Everyone was very nice and even though we don't speak Spanish it did not take very long to process everything. Thanks for the advice.
