Under the latest reforms, Mexican liability limits have increased considerably for accidental deaths. The old limit was 750 days of the minimum salary and the new limit is 5,000 days of the minimum salary with this being multiplied as much as 4 times if the deceased earned more than the legal daily minimum wage.

If you have purchased insurance or are going to purchase insurance pay particular attention to the amount of liability coverage you have.

It's $7 mexican pesos an hour, daily minimum fluctates by which area you are in. As a rough estimate, if you use 9 hours a day to calculate (work week is a max of 48 hours) that is $63 a day, at 5,000 days that's 315,000 pesos. At 12.5 exchange, $25,200 USD. Four times that for workers earning more than minimum wage would be ~$100,000 USD.

MikeMike, thank you for your update regarding death benefit payable in Mexico.

It is very difficult to convey the fact that life can become very miserable, very quickly, after an accident resulting in bodily injury, death, or extensive property damage in any country of the world. My message has always been and continues to be Buy Insurance, damit..... As noted in several of my posts, I lived in Mexico for many years, and worked with the International Red Cross, Cruz Roja, keeping track of foreigners/U S citizens held in Mexican jails. I found several serving time for being involved in accidents on Mexican roads.

This was many, many , many years ago, but even then the Mexican authorities were immediately incarcerating anyone involved in a "severe" (see above) accident. Foreigners and Mexicans alike would remain in jail until a judge sorted out fault in the accident. The Mexican police are not tasked with determining fault. Nor, do they care much about the fate of foreigners who have killed a Mexican - accidentally or not....

If the foreigner or Mexican had proper, legal insurance and was driving or riding a properly imported/registered vehicle/motorcycle, after a phone call.... the proper insurance company attorney would show up with proof of insurance and "bail" out the insured person. Who 9 times out of 10 hightailed it home - to the USA etc....

It was my experience that even with proper insurance those involved in a severe accident might not be released for weeks or even months. But without the proper insurance and properly imported and titled vehicle/motorcycle, it was likely to be more like years - even before the case came before a judge. Unless the incarcerated was able to finance his own attorney or had political connections. Not many did!!!

So, just bringing up the facts of the death benefit ajudicated by Mexican law might encourage everyone - where ever they ride in the world , to abide by all legalities while visiting foreign countries and this includes buying insurance for your properly imported and titled vehicle/motorcycle.

They change the game all the time eh, will check our policy but I don't know if we are covered for legal assistance.

We tried to get full cover for the bike etc but to no avail, seems very difficult to get what you want/need, given our last run in with insurance we are not sure what to do now cos when Ellen had her crash the agent turns up and pulls out size 1 font saying although we are covered for our medical we are not ... go figure.

All insurance companies are a pack of bastids!!!
