Thumbs up CA BMW Dealer report

Just had my 1200 GSA serviced and a new rear TKC80 fitted at the Costa Rican importer/dealer, Bavarian Motorcycles SA.

They appear to have done a first class job, and have pristine brand new premises with new GS, RT, etc. in stock, together with tyres, spares etc. They are solely BMW motorcycles and have the diagnostic computer (I had a printout of the brake bleed test). In fact the bike seems to be running sweeter now than after it's previous service at BMW of Hollywood! The manager, Julio, speaks English and has toured extensively in the US etc. on BMW's and a Gold Wing. He also told me they'd managed to get a traveller's (Canadian?) 1200GS's swinging arm replaced under warranty, which had fractured by the shock mount - Costa Rican potholes I suspect!

Can't recommend them highly enough.

What were you charged for the 'service' and how much for the tire?

Sorry for the delay, I was hoping the invoice would turn up, but it hasn't.

I think the grand total for the 6000 mile service and rear tyre was US$424 including tax etc., and I was quoted US$231 for the TKC80 including fitting (not sure if this was with or without tax).

I service my R100GS myself, so I can't comment on the costs for that, but the tire and installation costs seem rather high. I buy most of my tires from Motopartes in La Urca and the prices have ranged between $50(Vee Rubber 130/80-17) to the most expensive of $110(Anakee 130/80-17). A Pirelli 130/80-17 MT21 is $60. I also install the tires myself, but I would think any shop in Costa Rica, other than a dealership, would install a rear tire for less than $20. After all, the national avg. hourly wage here is around $1.20 per/hour.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
