Moto insurance for Guatemala

Hi are there any informed travellers out there that can clarify the legality of the requirement for third party or any other insurance for a motorcycle. I crossed the border today from Mexico to Guatemala, there was no insurance available at the border. If it is a requirement, where can I buy?
Thanks. Andy

But really necessary in all of Latin America for the legal assist cover which in the unlikely event of having a contretemps with another person will keep you out of custody whilst the judge decides who did what to whom. Ride safe.

If you ever get in an accident where people getting injured, regardless of guilt, Everybody will be ending up in jail and all vehicles will be confiscated till a judge decide who is guilty and that can take for ever, this applies to Guatemala as well in Honduras!
The good part is, if it happens in Guatemala , you will get free very good assistance if your country has an embassy or Consulate in Guatemala, called Asistur, if I remember the name good and will do all the legal work, till you free and surprisingly the person assigned to you will be 24 hours available.
In Honduras , you will be on your own
Both countries do not need insurance ( Liability) and it would be hard to get with foreign plates anyway and takes forever to get
So bottom-line is drive very defensive!

Thank you.

Thanks dedicated Hubbers for the quick response. Understanding the law makes all the difference when you have a run in with the Police and Officialdom.
