Importing my motorcycle to Guatemala

Hi, from the newest guy on the HUBB,
Last March I bought a 2002 low mileage single owner XT 600e in Panama, I am back in Canada now and planning what to do when I go back to Panama in the fall, I am thinking to ride to all the little corners of CA till I end up in Guatemala, and I am wondering how big a hassle and how many $ it would be likely to cost if I wanted to pay the duties and import the bike to Guate, with new plates and such,,, so I could hang around there for awhile and be able to leave the bike there to come back to Canada if and when the exploration business ever comes out of this slump, and then I would still have current paper work and plates when I get my next time off. Most years I don’t have work between late Oct and April or May, this year is different, there is almost nothing happening, so I will have an even longer down time,, life is a beach sometimes eh?
In Panama you have to take your motto in every year for photos and physical ID to get your new plates. I will get the new plates and exit permit in Oct 2009. I really have no definite plan to return to Panama after that, or to not return for that matter, but I want to check out some options.
I would appreciate the insights of anyone that has done this sort of thing before, especially into Guatemala, or can steer me in the right direction.
I’ve been getting lost in all the different forums, excellent eh, very helpful info.

I am looking forward to contacting people that are going to be in areas where I will be traveling to share information, and maybe do a little riding together if the opportunity arises.
These are the numbers on the bike, is there somewhere I can find out if there is anything I should know about this series of XT 600e 2002.

Chassis number # JYADJ 02172 A025409
Engine # * J302E 0025173 *

I have found that when a plan goes off the road, it often becomes an adventure, :funmeteryes:

I can just give you a little info. You are going to need a carneta de identificacion tributaria, or tax ID card. These are available for the asking, you will just need a Guatemalan mailing address. Ask for the Officina de Administracion Tributaria near Boulevard Liberacion in Guatemala City, I forget the exact address.

If noone else has better info, I would suggest you ask Hesler at the Kawasaki dealer on Boulevard Liberacion. He may be able to get it done for you, or at least point you in the right direction. He had the registration done for me on my new Kawasaki, but a registering a used and imported bike is probably a more complex and expensive project.

importing my bike to Guatemala

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the info, I will check it out when I get there. I am back in Panama now getting my gear organized for the trip and will be heading out next week. Once I get there I will pass on the info as to how to do it.

Thanks again Steve :palm::mchappy:
