Honduras, the mosquito coast, anyone done it??

Hello. Excuse my spelling, but i came to the internet cafe' unprepared and don´t have my map. I´m in the north coast in Tela and will be exploring for a few days. I see there is an oportunity to enter the mosquito coast and ride to a border crossing into N. Nicaragua. I suspect the roads are tough and access to gas and water scarce. Has anyone done this trip?? I would go alone to reduce the weight (2-up on a loaded '89 GS) and my girl would meet me in Nicaragua. Got a tourance on the back, conti on the front.Do i need knobbies? Bike sucks in the mud, they say it´s the dry season, but we already cancelled Belize due to rain. How about gas and water, i can do 300 miles on a tank. I can pack water and food if i need it. how about the danger factor? My spanish isn´t all that great so i couldn't talk my way out of any situations. How many days would it take from say Trujillo to the Nicaragua border?Any info will be greatly apreciated!

Ron, I´m now in Flores and have plans to check out some of the Mosquito Coast, either Honduras or Nic. The ITM maps I have seem OK, but in no way perfect.
I´m headed towards San Pedro on Lake Atitlan tomorrow for a week´s worth of spanglish. After that, I´m up for most anything. I´m on a DR650.

ahh Tela....nice area...in Nov 04 we rode to La Cieba then took the ferry across to Roatan...a friend keeps his GS in La Cieba and lives on the island...I'll email him...he rides Honduras and Nicaragua often...and is well versed in the area

ride safe...

Kids, this is slightly off-topic, but may be useful if you can't work out a northern Meskito coast route -

Dirt route from La Ceiba to Teguc -

I've still not ridden it, so can't add anything.
