Heading North Through Central America
 

Hi
I am currently riding north through C.A. I am in Granada Nic. right now.
I am planning to go through Honduras, El Salvador and into Guatemala then Mexico, U.S and finally back into Canada.
Just wondering if anyone has some good suggestions of where to stop and what to see? I plan on getting to Guatemala in a couple of days and then spending some time around Amatitlan and Antigua(I stopped in Tikal on the way down).

are you planning on bypassing Copan in Honduras?. Copan is magical.

I probably will pass on Copan. I plan to pretty much ride through Honduras and part of El Salvador tomorrow(providing the borders don't take to long). Then relax a bit when I arrive in Guatemala before heading up the west coast of mexico into baja.

From Granada to somewhere into El Salvador in one day is really going to test your patience. The >Nic to Hon crossing will take some time but the next one Hon to ES on the Panamerican is really going to fry your tolerance to a crisp as it is the absolute worst and most time consuming - figure on 3 hours. So dont start into the process too late . Ther e are a few motels on th ES side if you do find yourself there in the dark,.You can also overnight on the Hon side in Hotel Arcos just before the border complex and get an early daylight start on the frustrations.
Are you the guy with the Suzuki V Strom, Ont plate I fleetingly spoke to at the Costa Rica Nic border yesterday. Sorry, I was in a bit of a hurry to get out of there and so were you.
In Guatemala take the secondary highway down along the north sid e of Lake aAtitlan , you will wind up in Solola a, nice lake scenery, boat cruise, can then get back uphill onto the Panam to Huehuetenango thru highland Mayan country- crowded but scenic

A nice way of passing thru El Salvador is taking the coast road that passes near "La Libertad" port, you could take it from San Miguel heading south. This road also take you to the Guatemalan border.

In Guatemala you should go to Antigua, Atitlan lake, you could try to go to Pacaya volcano where you could be a few feets from the lava.

the other day I just took my time leaving Granada and decided to stay close to the Honduras border. Ended up staying in Somoto. It was a very nice town and I had a decent room with a tv, fan, and fridge all for $10. Today I managed both borders and actually made it close to Guatemala Santa Ana El Salvador. I thought I would try the border on the Pan American Highway. I have had amazing luck at the borders the whole ride from Panama north. I have not spent more than 1.5 hours at any of them. Now that I say that I will likely get held up tomorrow!
Thanks for the suggestions for Guatemala I think I may spend a bit of time there before heading into Mexico.
