Guatemala Bike/Advice Wanted
 

I am looking to buy a bike here in Guatemala and travel down to Panama and onto South America. I have a budget of around 25,000-30,0000Q for the bike or maximum 4000USD

I like to get off the beaten track and have no time constraints. From what I've read it sounds like a KLR 650 may suit my purposes. Any advice on this particular bike or any others.

After something that is easy to maintain and find extra parts. I have very limited mechanical experience.

I only have experience riding a Yamaha Virago 250 back in Australia.

Just a few thoughts here . Even a KLR is somewhat of an exotic high class motorcycle for GT standards. They are NOT cheap in Guatemala, a rich guy's toy relatively speaking. Most bigger bikes you see there are private imports, used, often restored insurance write-offs from the USA (caveat emptor). At dealerships a new one gets very pricy.
Best bet for a deal on a used bike is to start off and buy one in the USA.

all the dealers have used bikes as well , sometimes you can get a pretty good deal there .

or check out this local website , maybe you find something you like there .

Are you already here in Guatemala? Plenty of used bikes around if you look and talk to the right people. For example, myself and Fin here in Antigua usually have a good idea of what's floating around the area.

I agree w/ Sjoerd that a KLR can get pricey here and often have "interesting" backgrounds. Just met a guy selling one he brought from TX, looked rough in the original pictures - he paints all the plastics and now it looks pretty nice. Also not the original gauges.

Off the top of my head here are a few I know of:

XR650R thats been modified for long traveling
XR650R more stock
KLX300
XR650L nice one, that should be avail in a few weeks

Don't worry about the size of your wallet the real question is,
"How long are your legs?" There is a world of difference in seat height between a Yamaha 250cc Virago and the big Honda or the KLR.

have a look at the yamaha 200 ag it's the tractor within the bikes and tons of spares everywhere,very solid thing that is!!!
with that budget you might be able to even buy a new one.

I did some looking at new bikes when I was recently in Guatemala, and here is what I found.

The Honda dealer in Antigua has the CTX 200 for Q38,000 and the 125 Bros for Q20,000. For some reason they couldn't give me a price on a 250 Tornado, nor did they have one in stock.

I think the best value is the Bajaj (Indian) Pulsar, which is available in a 135, 180, and 220. A dealer in Guate is advertising the 220 for Q18,500. Those bikes are everywhere in Mexico, and Guatemala, can't speak for further south. The people I've talked to with them are happy. Not a dual sport type bike, though.

UM, a chinese brand I am not familiar with, has a 200cc dual sport that looks very good for Q12,500 at several dealers. This would be going out on a limb a little more, as I don't have any info on servicability or reliability.

i just bought the 125 ybr for the eqivalent of 15500qtz in nicaragua.
nice little bike very economic on the fuel side.
if you want to travel it's ok if you're in a hurry it's a bit slow.
does ride nicely on dirt roads.
if buying new ask about garantee world wide.

I agree with this and I do know that the Bajaj is everywhere. They were in Peru and have some nice shops in Managua. I also like the YBR 125 and rode one all around the Andes in Peru. Not so much power but man do they get the mileage. Mine is on display at the Estrellita in Cusco. Bought new from a electronics store and never did get the paperwork.
Great luck to you. I am in Nicaragua. (Costa Rica for the next couple of days.) I am riding a 2013 CRF 250 L Honda. Rode it down from Montana. Great bike for down here as long as one hits a gas station before any all day rides in the dirt.

I have an 05 Klr with 9,000 miles, $3,600 US. I would drive it to Guate. I love that trip, but how to transfer the papers? I believe I can only sell it between borders.
