Gas in Baja?
 

I am leaving on a trip to Mexico going through Baja and taking ferry overland to Mazatlan and beyond in Jan. Im taking a 2003 Honda Shadow Ace which only gets about approx 170 miles to the gallon. I am unable to carry any tanks will this be a problem?

170 miles to the gallon. I gotta get one of those! But seriously, 170 miles to the tank will be enough unless you really stray from the road. The gas stations are all identified on the AAA map but beware that lots of them often don't have gas. Always fll up when you can.

It's been a while since I was there, but while the two stations at Catavina have been closed for years, there is always someone there selling from drums. If you are in a small town and running low, ask around- someone usually has a drum and will sell you some.

The section from El Rosario across the Desert into Villa Jesus Maria, about 200 miles will require a gas stop at Catavina.As was already mentioned the Pemex stations are history,look for 2 cafes on the north side of the road,you can buy gas from barrels here.In a pinch, almost everybody carries some extra gas in their ranch trucks.You will love Baja.

Fill up as often as you can. In small towns you may have to ask around to find who sells gas out of a plastic drum. This will be more expensive than in a regular PEMEX but a lot better than pushing.

Thanks for the advice, I will be leaving from Canada on jan 14 and towing bike to Arizona to start and then will be coming back up Baja, anyone know where would be a good place to start in Arizona weather wise, also what is weather like in Mexico city as well as getting there in Jan Feb,

Wish I was in Baja right now!
There is nearly always a person selling gasoline and diesel out of drums on the back of a pickup truck or van parked at the ruins of the former service station plaza at the junction of Mex 1 and the side road to Bahia de los Angeles, which is about 110km south of Catavina. This will give you ample gas to do the 70km side trip to Bahia de L.A. where there is also gas sold at the outboard motor shop as you come into town.

Weather in Mex City in Jan & Feb is really good, no rain and quite warm during the day. Temp goes down at night but never really uncomfortable, especially if you are from Canada. Altitude may affect you and your bike and the smog level can be high.

And if going in January, don't forget to do a whale watching excursion in Laguna San Ignacio where you can actually TOUCH the whales!

If you travel south on the coastal highway once in mainland mexico, be sure to get gas as frequently as possible before michoacan because there is over 100 miles on that road with no gas stations. They reappear at KM 50, just past Barra de Nexpa

I{ve been travelling on the mainland for the last three weeks and have a month to go. Unless you go to extremely rural areas (bad gravel roads) gas shouldnot be a problem. There is a Pemex entering and leaving almost every city you come across. Some small towns have three or four. I think its the govt.s way of creating employment. Also, the gas is good, better than the US in my opinion! Enjoy Mexico!!

i m/c baja in 2001 ,no gas gerro negro to east coast ,1gal, in saddle bag was all i carry ,left side bag prefered,..watch out for bad vados.:funmeteryes:
