Extending 30 day Vehicle Permit - Mexico
 

Hi

Recently entered mexico from Belize, and the customs and aduana would only give us 30 days and the same for the bike.

We understand it is relitively easy to get the tourist visa extended at any immigration office in a major town (but it needs to be done near the expiration date?) but are not so sure about the bike permit. We were told we need get the tourist visa done first and then to go to a Benjercito office where extending the permit should be no problem.

The snag is, as far as we can establish these offices only seem to located at the borders? Does anybody know of any Banjercito offices (or other aduana offices) we could go to that do not involve having to drive back to a border?

Have looked at a previous posting re: this, but it dealt with a bike that was nearing it´s 180 day limit...though we will try the tourist hotline as recommended.

lookfor a shipping port. I recently renewed a permit at puerto morelas. Another port in the Yucatan would be Progresso.

I checked around a little on the net and found the following site with telephone numbers http://www.inami.gob.mx/paginas/dire...gaciones.htm#3 If this doesn't help you you could call the Instituto Nacional de Migracion the number is 01 55 53872400. They should be able to tell you where you can do the paper work. It shouldn't be difficult to do but you do need to extend your tourist visas first and then get the extension on the bike permit. If you don't have any luck drop me an email and I will look into it more for you. I work at an English schooland we have lawyers that get working papers for us and they should be able to tell me where you can fix it up.

Will now answer my own question:

Having got my tourist visa extended today it appears the temp vehicle import permit is automatically extended in line with the extended dates (up to 6 months) on the tourist visa (even though it says on the permit it expires 30 days from entry into Mexico).

We shall see........I will update this if we have any problems at the border.....

i have been told by the consulate that although immigration extends your visa, aduana/duty/banjercito will not know unless you renew the vehicle permit with them. The one person I know of that let his permit run out was not fined when he renewed it but each office may handle things differently. You can renew the permit at a shipping port and possible an international airport.
