Emergency! Need to leave bikes in Honduras.

Hi all,

My friend and I, who have travelled to Honduras from Alaska on Bajaj Chetaks, have sadly had to end our journey here in Choluteca. My friend needs surgery on his back and needs to fly home immediately. There is a good chance we will not return.

We are worried that we may not be allowed to leave the country without our bikes. We cannot afford to ship them back, nor do we have the time to organise that. We have organised to leave them with a friend for an indefinite amount of time.

We entered with them on temporary vehicle imports. Does anyone know if we will be unable to leave the counrty without them? Or will it simply be a fee we need to pay? If we were to return, would we have difficulties getting them out then?

Your thoughts on the matter will be very much appreciated.

Tim.

Sorry to hear about your situation. Its ages since I was there, but it used to be very strict rules about leaving the country without your vehicle. Most important - is it stamped into your passport?

If so I would start the process of getting it out. A few ways to do that:
1. Sell it (even for cheap money), and tranfer it to the buyer, who will have to pay import tax.
2. Crash it, and get the paper for that.
3. Go to Aduana an tell em about your situation, there might be possible to place them in a controlled environment for a period (even if your not coming back)

Let us know how it works out

No Mans Land storage (maybe)

I met a rider who had stored his motorcycle between the borders of Columbia and Venezuela, in the "no mans land" between the countries. Not sure if there is a storage business between El Salvador and Honduras or Nicaragua and Honduras, but you might ask around...see details below. You can leave the bike(s) indefinitely if you can find a storage service. Of course they will charge something.

Ask for advice via the Horizons Unlimited Communities for Honduras, Nicaragua and El Salvador.

Note: Friends tried to have their bikes crated and shipped from Buenos Aires, Argentina, by a third party only to find out they were required to be personally present. They couldn't have someone else complete thepapework for them. Thus, they had to return to BA from New Zealand to oversee the shipping.

Sorry to hear about your situation !
To leave the bikes legally in the country for a long period of time you have to pay the import duties .
You can sell them between 2 borders or you can just dump them somewhere, report them stolen and go with the police report to Aduanas in order to get them out of your passport.
If a place to store the bikes in Guatemala would help, just send me a PM.
