Baja California Mobile Coverage

Looking at a ride from San Diego down the west side of Baja to Cabo San Lucas and back. Does anyone have any idea on mobile coverage for such a ride. I have a Verizon account however there posted coverage map only shows the US. Thanks all!

I got Verizon too and I don't usually get service until I get to La Paz. But you can use the wifi at restaurants and hotels in every town and send emails.

Bajabackpackers

I've been living in the La Paz area for the last 5 years. My first 3 years were with the carrier I brought with me, Verizon because I didn't know any better. Thanks to the harsh Baja conditions, I was forced to replace my phone and took the opportunity to try ATT. ATT must have an agreement with TELCEL as I have coverage over most of the Southern Baja.

no hay problema

Tel Cel have the monopoly in Mexico. You can buy a Mexican SIM card for most USA phones. (if your phone is unlocked)

Or, buy a cheap "pay as you go" phone once in Mexico. They have Tracfone, works pretty well and CHEAP. Cell phone Kiosks everywhere in border towns like Tijuana. The kids there are wizards and can get you set up. (they did me anyway)

Good news is you see Cell towers everywhere along Mex 3 and Mex 1 highways. Like many developing countries, they skipped that infrastructure step of telephone poles (in some rural places anyway).

Should not be a problem ... and as mentioned WiFi is now everywhere. I had no problems getting on line in La Paz, Capo probably even better.

I just returned from Cabo on a bike ride.

I pretty much lost service at Ensenada but was amazed to have crystal clear cell and text in Cabo.

Verizon user with no special service (international, etc.) added (but there was an extra fee attached).

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
