Do I need a motorcycle title to cross Mexican border both ways?
 

I'm a foreigner and bought my 1200GS from a dealer in San Diego. Have been waiting for the title over a month and because of a number of bureaucratic procedures will have it at my place in San Diego only in 2-3 weeks. As I'm really tired of sitting on my a$$ in the US the idea is to start the trip and have title FedEx'ed to my location in Mexico.

Please advise

I crossed last year and got though with just an Arizona registration, but I think I just caught the guy in a good mood. I really was supposed to have my title. If you plan on continuing south you will definitely need it.

As I've said elsewhere, I needed a title exactly once out of fifty or so Latin American border crossings---and it wasn't Mexico (I think it was Guyana). Lots of Canadians make it to Ushuaia without even being issued titles. You'll certainly need a current registration, and should make sure all your numbers are accurate.

Caveat: in this, as in everything else in the world, mileage varies.

I just crossed the border 3 weeks ago in Lukeville and I was asked for my title; I have been in and out of Mexico for many times and this was the first time that I was asked for my title . It took me over an hour of arguing and phone calls to the south border and to te Guatemalan embassy (my bike is registered there) in order to establish that in Guatemala the registration is proof of ownership as well .
