There is no road connecting Colombia and Panama. You can either fly or take a boat. There are small private sailboats that leave from Cartagena and sail to Panama via the San Blas Islands. Some are reputable and safe, others are not. Your MC will generally be lashed on deck and subject to salt water--it can be a rough trip at times. I recommend the sailing trip just because the San Blas are an amazing area not to be missed--no MC riding there, but fun to visit by small boat. You'll probably end up in Portobello in Panama.

Agree to a point on this as well. Golden Eagle sails from Cartagena and return and we did it 3 mths back....San Blas is great.. The bike is covered well with tarpaulins.....took just on 5 days... 375.00 you and 375.00 bike US$. You can fly as well for similar costs with Copa or Garig.... I hate water and get seasick so would do that option if we had to again instead of sailing.. but Golden Eagle was quite luxurious and great Captain - Peter.

Hola

Matteo,, please contact www.hostalwunderbar.com

Guido & Silvia organise most of the reputable boats to do this crossing. I have used them & recommended them to many riders. They can arrange the passage from Columbia to Panama by a boat. As mentioned earlier in this post, the San Blas Islands are stunning & the whole trip via a boat is worth it.

If you want to ride the darrien then that is a different matter. I am interested in doing it but a lot more rersearche & balls needed yet.

Cheers Mojo..

The Darien Gap is the Jungle area between Panama and Colombia. There are no roads, no border checkpoint, no law and no garranties that you come out the other side. Some people have done it. I have not. Known drug trafficking routes have changed so there is probably less danger now than say, 10 years ago.

Cheapest option are the trading boats from Turbo, about eight to ten days and will cost you about $300 including bike. There is a captain Rafa mentioned on another post who goes regularly, but there are many, probably every four days or so.

Talk to people on the dock in Turbo, you might need to take a speed boat out of Colombia and meet them on the border as there are laws on passengers for this first section. Feel free to question me on this, i feel like the most qualified gringo on this area as i was living there for over two months at the end of 09ยด.

I would also encourage any rider to attempt the Gap again but certainly wouldn't take any responsibility for life or limb.:stormy:
