buying bike in mexico city
 

hi, guys...

i'm thinking of going to spend some time living in mexico city - to teach english and learn spanish. after this, i'd like to buy a bike to travel (maybe north, maybe south, who knows...)

how much would i spend on a half-decent second hand bike - 650-ish to travel on? are decent bikes expensive?

There are not many choices, I think you could find KLRs or F650 or dakars.
If that is what you are looking for.

A 4 year old F650 could cost around 50,000 pesos to 60,000

Check a newspaper named "Segunda mano", it has lots of bikes and cars.
It comes out every week.
Be carefull with the "Chilangos" (People from Mexico City) in dealing with money.
Also check that all numbers and papers are well, there are some cases of stolen bikes sold.

Contact a BMW dealer and ask for a BMW club. That could help.

Try the following web page http://www.autoplaza.com.mx/ look on the left side top somewhere, it says motos, click there and it all comes up. Be aware when buying, you need the original factura and the tax payment papers for the last 5 years. If it has plates the tarjeta de circulacion, registration and the plate.
Any foreigner can buy a bike in Mexico, no problem. When you at it get a Mexican moto drivers licence too.

whatever bike you buy get some proper papers if you want to cross borders.

I travelled together with an Australian biker (Mark P.) in South America and he had bought his 1980 Yamaha 650cc Four Cylinder Seca in Mexico Ciy. He only had the bill (factura) from the bike shop in Mexico. He used an old US numberplate and that was it. Crossing borders was not that easy, but he made it down to Argentina in the end and even sold the bike for some pesos.
