Broken Leg Guatemala - Help required
 

Hi,

My name is roger and unfortunatly I had an accident just after the boarder and broke my knee in several places, I was airlifted to Guatemala city and was operated on at Multi Medica Hospital, I am now trying to get my bike here and was wondering if anybody knows of a storage unit where I can keep my bike while I organise for it to be frieghted back to NZ.

Any assistance would be greatly apprecited.

So sorry to hear about your accident Gugie.
Is your entire trip down through South America off now and perhaps to be rescheduled after you heal? From your earlier posts I assume that this is the BIG ride you were planning with the missus on the DL1000.
If your bike is still out there on the Panam somewhere east of Cd.Cuauhtemoc border crossing getting it in to Guatemala city should not be a big problem. Is the Missus with you now at the hospital/recovery hotel ? Perhaps she could go back to the bike location town and arrange shipment which should be quite simply a case of hiring a pickup truck with driver. In Guatemala towns you can find these for hire readily at the town square - just ask around for a " fletero". They stand waiting for work at the square early in the morning. All you need to do is look for a suitably large,more recent model pickup truck and ask if the driver is willing to take the bike, and perhaps the passenger, to a point in Guatemala City,or whatever location . He will calculate the time and distance and fuel requirements and offer a price . For him it might be a two day from home job, so the price negotiation will consider his total expenses with meals and an overnight stay . For these fellows an $80US payday is a reasonable wage ( speaking from having used a similar sevice to haul a big bike 170km into GT city in '09)
As for a location to store it in GT City, I cannot give any specific advice , but you might consider having it taken to one of the major Suzuki dealerships ( Zona 4) so that they can look at you earlier reported fuel leakage problem , and then you might be able to persuade them to store it for you.
How is the diagnosis of your broken knee- will it be a long convalescense and rehabilitation or will it heal without drama? Is the delay going to totally mess up any schedule for South America or can you afford to recuperate in GT ,or Antigua or some low cost location and use the time to exercise the leg and perhaps fill the time with a Spanish course? or will you ,as you suggest ship the bike back to NZ .In that case the Suzuki dealership might be of help in crating the bike and helping with some shipping suggestions.

Thanks guys for all your kind offers of help, it has been great to know that we are not alone .
Juilo Hartmann in Guatemala City has been taking care of all my needs (he is such a great guy)and is arranging for the bike hopefully to be sold .

I leave Guatemala on Wednesday and will return next year to finish the trip .

My leg is pretty badly broken and needed a bone graft, so I am unable to walk on it for 2 months. This has made it impossible to carry on this year. Well not impossible , it would be to much of a rush and I feel that my leg would be to weak for the trip.
