Best way to travel central america?
 

A girlfriend and I are headed to central America soon.destination is Honduras but would like to experience some of the surrounding countries, any information on the best and safest ways to travel central America would be soo helpful! Thank you.

Most people on this board, myself included, will say the "best" way to travel is by motorcycle. The safest is probably airplane. Maybe you could flesh out your question some more and get better answers.

In my best opinion, the best way to travel most places is to spend the occasional time in a hostel. Camping will give you the best experiences you can imagine. In my case, I would use hostels maybe once a week or when I got stuck, and would camp everywhere I could. What this leads to is opening yourself up for a more genuine experience in that particular country, ie, locals coming to talk to you, offering you local knowledge, foods etc.

However, to make camping easy it usually involves your own transport, ie, bicycle, motorbike, car, skateboard etc, as it can be hard to want to get off a bus in the middle of nowhere and camp, whereas with your own transport its no breeze to stop 100's of kilometres from a town and camp...and you will still find people coming to talk!!

So all in all, as most of everyone knows, the best way to travel is to somewhat avoid the tourist trap, and open yourself up to locals in whatever way possible...

And yes, add some beef to your question. Hope that's a good start. My choice way to travel C Am is UNDOUBTEDLY on a motorbike.

The "best" way IMHO is to take the road less travelled, while heeding local advice (not sensationalized North American scare mongering) regarding safety.

While some of the tourist areas are popular for a reason, the best experiences can be had off the "beaten path". My best experiences were in small villages where I was the only non-local. Low key tourist areas, especially those catering to locals tend to give better experiences than the somewhat fake "package tourist" areas if being the lone gringo in town isn't your thing.

Probably the best way to go is to just hop on your bike and start riding wherever your whims take you.

Where in Honduras? if it is the Bay Islands and coming from the northI would go via Guatamala and hit the border into Honduras at the Copias Ruinas border crossing. This, in the past would give you the least hassle crossing, something that Honduras excels in. Best way to cross CA IMHO, wait for the Guat - Colombia bridge to be built. Whatever way you choose, Ride safe and keep a tight grip on your wallet.

Heading south this fall (2012) solo from eastern Texas boarder to Guatemala. Plan to stay there for a couple months and then further south to Costa Rica etc. Any advise in trip planning would be greatly appreciated. This would be my first time on an extended bike trip.
