Best time to Travel Central/South America

My planned route is to take me from the US to Tierra del Fuego (typical, I know). The trip will probably span 6 months, maybe more. I realize that the seasons are swapped south of the equator, but I'm wondering about the rainy seasons throughout the different climates I'll be going through. Are there any sort of "ideal" months to do this journey, or do the climates range so much that it's best to just go when I can and sort it out as it comes?

Hi
I entered Mexico in the August and arrived in Colombia in the October and worked way down to TDF for the December.Had a few tropical downpours in Central America and missed some terrible landslides and flooding on the Costa Rican Pacific side as I went down Carribean side to Panama. So CA was more luck than judgement.
Of course Bogota and Quito were a bit wet at times and found Lake titicaca a bit chilly as you would expect. Most important though was that the Bolivian salt flats were bone dry which was about November.
Not sure what are best months to go but i had no weather that caused any problems or held me up.Maybe i was lucky !

Seasonal temp extremes will be in the high and lower latitudes, at least the ones that concern safety.
You can always putt up and down in altitude in the others, as your needs suit.
