baja lodging
 

So I've figured we would stay in pensions and such whenever possible, keep the costs around $5-15 per night. We'll have our own sleeping bags, but we weren't planning on actually *camping*.

On Baja, both in touristy and nontouristy areas, what's the best way to get cheap lodging? Ask for a pension? I've heard it's hard to stay anywhere on Baja for under $40 or so. Is that true?

I'm just looking for tips to get started.

Baja hotels
 

There is a good hotel just as you enter La Paz on the northbound side. It is called Calife or something. I forget the exact price but I think it was $35 USD. It is not in the center of the action, but there is lots of parking. You can also go out to the beaches past the ferry and camp for free or a minimal charge.


There is a cheap hotel off Hwy 1 at Catavina on the northbound side (actually two but they have the same owners, one is on the hwy and the other is about one mile down a gravel road. But no heat/hot water and can get cold at that altitude.

Highly recommended is Las Casitas in Mulege. This is a bar-restaurant in town (quite central) which also runs a number of quite basic motel type rooms in the back which are built around a very pleasant garden courtyard. The owners are quite happy to have you bring a motorcyle into the courtyard overnight. On a trip last March the place was jammed with bikes and the atmosphere was social and most enjoyable. A friend and I were so taken with the place that we contrived to stay there on our northward return.

I don't remember the actual cost but it was pretty modest. Worth a detour.
