Where to put tent poles?

I'm going to be using Zega cases on the bike. Unfortunately, the tent poles I have (Sierra Designs Strecthdome), are too long to fit the cases, lest I pack them sideways and lose too much space. I was thinking of a plastic tube, with screw tops (plumbing stuff) and tying it somewhere on the bike. Anyone have other ideas?

I assume the trouble is that you need to lock them up, otherwise the obvious answer is just to strap them on top of your boxes very tightly so they don't get knocked around and bent.

I usually roll mine up in the center of my sleeping bag and then bungee both to the top of my boxes to make a neater package and to keep them from getting bent or broken when riding on rough terrain.

If you need to lock them up, I don't have any adivce at the moment.

Best of luck,
Wright

I've used a piece of drainage tube (plastic), piece of timber in each end (lose fit - allow for damp and swelling) then steel U straps through slots cut in ends. (timber held in by straps). Straps have holes in end for small padlock. Cable lock through straps and rack.(oh for a sketch, but presume you can follow the logic)
If bike goes down, holder should move enough to prevent damage to poles (my other concern along with security).
Used this for at least 10 years.
If someone really wanted to nick them they could - but deters theft.
Possible to get alloy tube perhaps to make even better.
Always wondered if the authorities wonder if I'm smuggling arms though - looks dubious!
