Vented Riding Pants
 

My riding jacket has several zippered vents that can be opened in hot weather which certainly extends it's climate range and reduces the need for 'on' and 'off' stops in changeable weather. I'd like to have a similar arrangement for the pants. Does anyone know who might make vented riding pants that still maintain some degree of waterproofing?

Ive a set of hein gericke trousers that have a zip from near the hip to the knee on each leg. Even with the zip open they are suppose to be water proof, over only tested this a bit at we dont really get that much warm rain here in Northern Ireland. The zip doesnt allow air straight onto bare skin but you can feel the difference from open to closed.

Not too sure if you get this company over in canda but they are massive in europe so you should be able to get a pair sent over. Only thing is they are quiet expensive at around £220 or so.:scooter:

They are a little exy.. the only thing i can say it that I went and tried them on but they jsut did not fit my shap.. oh well ...

Patrick thanks for your notes as well....where weather is pretty predictably hot -southern Nevada Utah Colorado-its usually pretty easy to dress for the heat while still retaining some protection ....

what I'm trying to do is figure out how to minimize the on/off dance that seems to be needed in more variable climes...I'm sure you've done the ahead of the rain, stop and suit up, then no rain, sun comes out, another stop to rain gear off, then out of nowhere, it pours.

I seem to ride either Hot or Wet. Now... in some places that's a desirable state of affairs - but usually in a location other than on a bike.

There may be no solution to this - on a horse it might be oilskins - but they flap too much at speed.

Maybe I should just try to get good at gearing on and off while still riding.....:mchappy:

Try any ReVit mesh pants. I've pushed the bike 2 km in 35 degree heat and 90% humidity (Mumbai in July) and did not get wet and sweaty trousers. Getting stuck in traffic is not an issue at all - the pants don't feel hot. The liner is very very effective - and 100% waterproof. And you do not need to keep stopping to remove/put on waterproof layers. Just put it on and stay in it for 18hrs if need be.

There is no thermal insulation in the ones I have - for our kind of weather it is completely unnecessary. It gets very hot and wet/sticky, not cold.

Besides, if it gets wet (you'll be dry), this will probably be the first item in your clothing to dry out in your hotel room (with the liner still in!).

Only minus I see - price (but here, you get what you pay for)

Greetings STG, I have had good luck with Joe Rocket Alter Ego Pants. Ok armour and underneath rain pant included. They unzip a 2" "belt" starting at one knee up and around the back and down to the other knee. It is excellent in our hot riding in Kamloops. The is a Coarse dark mesh material so privacy and some protection. It is a drawback as the mesh is not going to help much but the ventilation is excellent for upper legs and groin.
The cold mornings are coming for us now so the rain pants will be put in soon. I use them dualsporting and for hwy. Shoud be in your shops in Alt.

Ray...good to hear form you...funny you should mention the JR pants...was in a local dealer Saturday and looked at exactly those....kinda wonder what the zip was for, but seemed like a good idea....things are cooler here in Alberta (8c) but I'm heading off for northern Nevada where things are about 30c still...expect to get lots of weather along the way...still undecided though...might stay with jeans, long johns and Gortex agaiin....not much protection in a fall but OK in the rain and cold....maybe see what's available stateside. How's summer on the Norge been?

Thanks everyone for the tips and suggestions....and Patrick....Won't be able to make socal this trip....appreciate the heads up on Black Rock tho....is one of the places I am aiming at. Will also have a little back country back and forth across Idaho, and maybe pick up a milkshake in Fields....Looking at overall weather, looks like Hot might Not, be. Packing list now included the riding pants, as well as the jeans, long johns, and Goretex. I guess its part of the riding way.....being ready for as many eventualities as possible.....maybe good training for Scotland next year....

I have just (2 weeks ago) grabbed a pair of these off ebay (nice and cheep). My initial feelings are that my search is OVER. I really like em. Although i have not had the chance to try them out in 40deg C weather yet they are warm when it is wet and cold (uk gets lots of that) and even with normal trousers underneith this weekend when we actually got some sun i could feel the flow though. So right now I would say give these guys a try! :thumbup1:

Down side it there there is no hip armour (except some built in perminant foam:thumbdown:) other then that the knee armour is good, the armour pockets keep it where you want it. they are easy on and off (yes even with boots on!!!:thumbup1::clap::clap:). Kepts me dry in a major down pour.. Well until i found some deep fords to play in... then nothing was gunna keep me "dry".. but i was still warm!
