Thor 50/50

Thot 50/50 boots. Suitable for a Cape to Caïro trip? Maybe not that protective as full mx boots, but very comfy, light and will do as hiking boots too. It'll spare me alot of room in my panniers... What do u guys think?

I have a pair (exact same color BTW).

What I like:

- very comfortable
- light
- good for walking

What I do not:

- not rain proof (riding more than 30 seconds with light rain and your feet will be wet)
- sole is not aggressive enough for mud or slippery surface
- I had to change the plastic part which attaches to buckles twice
- The plastic part which covers the boot started to separate.

IMO, it is OK for occasional riding, but not for a long trip like you plan.

I went with Sidi Rain discovery and they are much better all-rounders (water-proof, still comfy - but not as comfy as the 50/50 - good for walking for a few hours, much more protective, higher quality...).

If you still prefer a low profile boot, I have seen one which looks like the 50/50 but is supposed to be water-proof. Can't remember the brand (Maybe AlpineStar...). I think it is worth a look at it.

I had a pair for 2 years that I recently sold as I'm getting rid of crap in preparation for a long trip. They were my every day commute boot of choice when the weather was above 65-70 degrees F, I'd ride to campus, go to class, walk around etc in them and basically they were my everyday footwear since I don't have a car.

Easy enough to walk in but I wouldn't want to hike in them all day, ok ankle and good foot protection. Also had a problem with the buckles breaking off at the plastic strap. Had waterproof boots for wet days though, the thor's have a large mesh panel and ventilation holes so they don't keep the rain or mist out.
