Tent for use in Australia?

Hi guys,

Can anyone recommend a good tent for Australia? Is it better to buy it in down under or here in the UK?

Cheers,

Frank

A good tent is a good tent. You don't need anything specific just for Oz. Any decent tent will have good ventilation and be bug proof (2 main concernes for Oz), but it can get cold down there too so bare that in mind.

Just buy the best tent you can afford from a company with a good rep and you'll be sweet.

As for where it would be cheapest, that depends. It's usually cheaper to buy stuff like that in the area where it's made: if you go for a European make then it's often better to buy in Europe. That said, you may save space in your airline luggage by waiting until you arrive.

I always find it best to shop around in actual shops so I can try things out physically and see the quality for myself. Then when I've found a suitable model, go online and see if it's cheaper from an internet shop.

Good luck and happy travels.

What is a good tent for Britian?

That would depend ..
Winter in the highlands backpacking or

Summer in Cornwall with the car?

You need to supply more information.

Yes you can buy tents here .. along with everything else ..
Paddy Pallin - Home - Leaders in Travel & Outdoor Adventure
Mountain Designs - Gear For Places You'd Rather Be
Snowgum Australia :: Homepage

are some of the main stores.

One thing .. if you are going to use an inflating sleeping mat .. put a foam mat under it .. we have lots of thorns .. came up at a UK HU meeting I attendened. Grant imediately said - "You're Australian - they have heaps of thorns" :)

And following on from that - the tent floor will have holes in it afterwards. Only small ones.

We've always used the free standing igloos, inner made of mosquito netting and the outer a waterproof flysheet to ground level. No pegs required to keep it up - which can be important when the ground is like concrete.

If it's just for one person then I would recommend a swag, I nearly bought this one here is made for motorcyclists:

but decided it wasn't required.

You really don't need anything special in the way of a tent for Australia. I use a $29.95 3 man dome tent I bought in Kmart. As well as getting me all the way around Australia I have also used it throughout Russia, Kazakhstan and from the tip of Norway (Nordkapp) to the South of Italy (Palermo).

You're better off buying an elcheapo and replacing it regularly (not that you need to, mine is now 10 years old and still going fine) if required.

swag and tarp

depends on the weather, of course, but swag and small tarp combo goes a long way. lets you nod off gazing at the stars too, when the tarp's not needed.
later,
andy.

yeah, you want something you can pack/deploy quickly after a hard day or if it's cold in the morning or if you're really drunk

tents in oz

Just come back from riding in Oz , bought a 30$Aus igloo type tent (2 person) from Woolco it worked fine free standing and quick to put up with bug netting.
Best to buy your sleeping bag in UK as all the Aussy ones I could find rolled up to about 3 times the size of the tent get a three season one as it`s cold at night in the outback in winter. If your doing W.A get a personel head net from a camping shop out there or the flies will drive you nuts.
Keep rolling along.
