For all you foks with m.c. questions...

I think LOUIS motorcycle equipment company in Germany is a pretty good place, as is Biker Land (also in Germany). Bought things from both companies (I'm living in Japan and just can't get the stuff I want for the price I would like over here!!) and I am more than satisfied! Fit ok, price ok, you only gotta check sometimes because they have specials all the time (I'm talking biiiiig savings)! Just for information purposes, I am NOT affiliated with these 2 companies!

somewhat late reply to klr650tr's questions

newenough.com is an excellent and economical internet supplier and they do the most accurate description of riding gear I've ever found. I have purchased two jackets, pants and boots and all fit well.

Tour Master makes inexpensive and suprisingly good quality gear. The build quality compares with an Aerostitch jacket I have. I have their Transition jacket and Jean textile pants as well as a tank bag and a tailpack.

The Jean pants are similar to the Venture except the Jean pants have no side zipper or liner and you must wear them like jeans. The disadvantage is that they have a nylon like inner fabric which is not comfortable next to your skin. They are a loose enough cut to wear over jeans but this defeats their advantage to me which is that they do not bind without jeans and I can swing a leg over my KLR - and they are cheap with good armor and have a waterproof membrane. If wearing jeans they are warm enough to ride in near freezing weather. I also have Joe Rocket pants which are very similar to the Venture and with these it is harder to swing a leg over but you can put them on easily with the side zippers if it starts to rain. They and the Tour Master Jeans are too hot and sticky to wear in hot weather.
If you put the liner in you could use them for snowmobile pants and the Tour Master liner is probably heavier.

Best choice for hot weather is a mesh jacket. I bought a Power Shift jacket from Newenough very similar to what is now sold as the Intercooled because it is a loose cut and it has leather on the outside of the arms. Pictures of mesh jackets that have been in a crash tend to have all the mesh on the outer arm area badly abraided. The loose fit allows for a liner or fleece jacket underneath and over the top I wear my old MSR Goretex enduro jacket for wet and cold. Hope this helps.

Strong outer shell

I bought a flash pair of Mountain Hardwear Goretex overtrousers and took the knee out in a minor fall in the dirt.

I have since shelled out the brass for a pair of DriRider RallyCross pants that have a removable waterproof inner so the waterproof membrane is well protected. The pants are well ventilated with opening thigh vents. They go over the outside of boots unlike motocross pants. They have a velcro band at the botton so there are no flapping bits to melt on the exhaust pipe of a dirt-bike.

Only gripe is that the kness have some sewn-in padding in addition to the closed-cell foam knee-pads that makes the knees look funny. I took out the closed-cell foam knee-pads and use the hard motocross knee pads. Great for road-side repairs and cold conditions. Oh and the large thigh pockets don't have a transparent panel for maps. I may modify that.

There is a matching jacket that even better than the pants

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
