options for roof tent?

we are an family 2 adults and 3 children age 2, 12 and 14 planing and trip to north africa ´( marocco, libya, algeria). when packed i think an roof tent is quite heavy and do not accomondate us all!

many says that "you dont want to sleep on the ground cause of **all kind of things**. after all bikers dont have an rooftent....!

smaler and lighter tent on the ground could save us €€€, space and wight.

what kind of tent is to recomend? is there any "golden rule"?

we are "rookies" or 1st timers so we like to eliminate as many errors before we leave and contribute to successfull trip!

please, you who are "dessert foxes" share some experiece and advices!

it's depended on your proposal trip time, those countries (as desert countries ) are so hot during summer days and so cold during winter nights, so let us know when you are planning to cross.
consider that Marocco/Algeria boder still closed since ages )

arrival to Africa is planed in late december or early january!

I know about closed border, i have read Chriss Scott's "sahara overland". SOO much usefull informatin for rookies like us! A real WIKIPEDIA!

destination is not realy clear yet, i like to see "the-good-of-both" ie MArocco and sahara sand. mostly fasinated of Atlas mountains, like to see casablanca and Maracesh!

futher idea was maybe see NMarocco thistime, but when gear shopped, maybe next trip could go to Alger, Libya, Tunis and egypt! big country to explore!

as long as we have chidren with us so we think Marocco is best way to learn us about all, and when they grow up, we can take us out for more demanding trips!

as you see we realy ARE ROOKIES, dont know anything for sure, just a lost of plans and dreams!

thanks for you reply!

4x4 overland truck available

Hi Jan,

Just read your post. We're just coming to the end of a fabulous 7 month trip around southern Africa (S.Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique) which we have done in our wonderful 4x4 overland truck, affectionately known as Manfred. My wife and I and our two boys (4 and 8 when we started) have absolutely loved our time in Africa. Manfred has been a really comfortable and reliable home for us as we have trundled from city to wilderness and all places in between.

I guess you may have already set off and sorted out a vehicle for your trip, but just in case you haven't, you can read more about Manfred here: 4x4 Overland Truck For Sale

I hope you have a great journey. The single best thing about our trip was the uninterrupted time together as a family. I hope you find the same profound pleasure on your trip.

Best of luck,

Roo tent vs ground tent

Our first trip was on bikes and we took a ground tent which we never had any problems other than heavy rain flooding us out a few times.
Now we're in a 4x4 and bought a roof tent - its really comfy and very quick to put up/down. In certain places we've felt "safer" on the roof but generally speaking a ground tents just as good.

Remember roof tents are rubbish in high winds and they have the disadvantage of having to pack it up is you want to go into town/sight seeing - a ground tent you can leave in place.

But I love the roof tent!
