Cheers for that my Brother has been after a pair of cheap boots for a while now. Some of the other stuff looks ok as well.
might try the bike to bike for £24:scooter:

You will have no one to talk to for £24.

That is the price for just one unit!

What's the quality like on Lidl's bike gear, I've never managed to get to a big enough Lidl in time to see any off it, but if it's OK I'll make the schlep out to a big one in a couple of week's time (I notice in France we get the same stuff but about a week later)

You'll have all the fellow Lidl shoppers within a 5km radius I suppose?

The Lidl stuff generally looks pretty cheap and basic and I wouldn't buy it personaly. But if you are on a budget, it looks robust enough - just not very comfy. Not totally convinced by the quality of the protection either. Having said that, I was looking at a back protector in my local branch the other day which looked really good.

Might be good stuff to have in for a passenger if you give the occasional pillion.

Matt :)

Opinion

I got a kidney protector and it is low quality but value as it's so cheap and will last the year's daily use till the next year it's on offer again. It adds lots of warmth. The underwear is absoutely excellent value. The socks should be even more so. I got a bike to bike communicator and it is useless. I personally wouldn't dare to use a helmet or back protector. The bike to bike thing got stuck in my ear in my helmet-agony and dangerous. You'd be better getting a used quality one or even paying full price. I'd rather get a used jacket or trousers from Hein Gericke's ebay offers than Lidl's outer clothes too. Totally biased opinions, Linzi.

I picked up the alarm/disc lock last year as it's one of the few with a pin small enough to fit my TA's discs.

It's decent enough quality, I've dropped it loads of times and the alarm still works, great value for under a tenner.

Got the intercom thingy too, less impressed with that but I only bought it to see how we got on talking to each other... It does work but only up to about 40mph then it's inaudible in the wind noise. Not very comfy in-helmet either, I ended up fitting the earpiece into the padding beside my ear.

I do like their chocolate biscuits though...

I usually buy the underwear they get. Great value.
I wouldn't touch the lids either. They got a really bad write-up in one of the German mags. I know one lad who did buy open-face helmets for himself and his wife to use while doing a Harley tour in the states. Very uncomfortable and didn't even bother bringing them back home.
I was speaking to another friend today who turned up in the w'proof jacket and pants. He reckons they're OK. Wore his Shoei lid and Sidi boots with them so he's not normally one to skimp on gear.

Hein Gericke have recently cut the prices of their entry level clothing, according to the email I got recently. A little more expensive than Lidl but worth a look.

Anyone got a link for HG's eBay shop?

Hi can you buy this stuff online? I have been looking and I cant see how I can!

thanks George

backofbeyond 17 Mar 2009 09:11

My local Lidl was just about empty yesterday morning apart from a crowd around the bike gear. Flip front helmets (£40) and boots (£30) seemed to be the stuff everyone was interested in - presumably because they'll only have a limited number in each size.
I bought a pair of boots and they seem to be ok for the money. I wouldn't want to head off on a long trip with them but for puttering around on some of my classic bikes they'll be fine

Not online

Nope, not offered online, only to first come. But if you post your needs SOON, I'll nip in and get them if I can and post them for cost. Linzi.

Proably too late now, but that was a very kind offer of you Linzi, thank you.

If anyone's in Nottingham, the one on the Mapperley Road still has pretty much something of everything (or it did as of last night - Wednesday 18th).

They appear to have run out of thermal underwear though, unless they had some more in stock. :(

I have a GBP20 head so bought a GBP20 helmet from Lidl. Perhaps inevitably with being a jet helmet, it was noisy enough to keep my speed down to 60mph (not such a bad thing) on my Big Trip To Turkey. But it did the job. And I didn't worry about getting it scratched or nicked as I would have done had I taken my carbon fibre full-face. And it was cooler in the heat, and felt less claustrophobic. I felt more "Out There". Which is, after all, what it's all about.

I will echo the comments made by others who have pointed out how much easier it makes conversations with locals at petrol stations, junctions, etc. Yeah yeah, I know you can take your full-face helmet off, but after the tenth time in an hour it becomes a bit of a pain, especially if you wear glasses as I do. And because it's a hassle, you tend not to bother. So you isolate yourself from the culture you are riding through.

I recognise that in an accident I could possibly say goodbye to my chin. But at the same time, the enhanced peripheral vision, especially in cities like Istanbul, made me actively safer. I'd take an open-face again, especially if travelling on a slower bike.

stuxtttr 24 Mar 2009 15:26

I missed out this time the only bits left were the helmets, I already have the rider to pill intercom and the Mrs loves it bar the painful earpeiece but for £6 you cant expect much.

My Bro got some boots he is more than happy with them.

I have an Aldi jacket £60 its ce approved and to be fair there are plenty other jackets out there for that price or less.

I think you have to be realistic with this gear its budget stuff so you cant expect the world but I still think better to have good cheap gear than nothing at all.

When you see some people riding in normal clothes it makes me cringe.

That said I think my walking boots are safer than my mx boots simply due to the comfort and control they offer.:scooter:
