Aventure riders are not the biggest part of bike riders and a statistic that says that more people get neck fractures wearing fullface than people wearing openface is just as flawed as any other statistic.

So the guys in open face survived or did they just die from blood loss? Statistic doesnt say...

Also you need a bit of force to break a neck and I think that many accidents involving openface are moped or scooter accidents or veteran riders who manage to brake down enough before impact.

many of the fullface accidents will be Valentino Rossi look alikes on shiny plastic shell bikes driving much much to fast and hitting cars, lightpoles and whatever on their way off the bike.

If you apply enough force it doesnt really matter what you wear.

If the full face snags on a treestump and twists your neck, then imagine what would happen in an openface? No jaw left anyone? I would rather die fast I think, because having your jaw ripped off is a slow and painfull death.

When I've come off the bike ,I've mostly slid along on my arse or elbows .
Haven't clobbered my head yet .
I like the flip fronts , cool in summer and good in the rain and you can talk to people.
There are a couple that can be used with the front raised whilst riding .
But the new models all seem very short on chin space and a direct frontal blow would probably break my jaw .
My head is not symetrical [ yeah yeah !] and I find full face lids really annoying .
I would like to try out an Arai XD or Shoei Hornet on the bike and see how they feel at speed - not flip fronts but probably the next best thing .

It's almost impossible to predict the kind or extent of any injurys one might receive in an accident ,so why sweat over it , just buy a well fitting helmet of any kind .


Mr R E Fulton wore a pith helmet when he rode around the world in the thirties , very colonial and "quite proper" and the mere fact of wearing it allowed him to pass through a couple of road blocks .However , I have found that the buffeting from the V Strom's screen makes it lift at speeds above 100 mph ; maybe I should buy a BMW and wear a pickelhaub ?
