Cooking Oatmeal

Okay, I have a serious problem. I usually eat oatmeal for breakfast which I cook on my whisperlite stove. However, it always boils over even when I use very little water and very little oatmeal. I even skipped the oatmeal sometimew when I was in bear territory because of this. Any suggestions.

A bloke I knew used to eat uncooked oatmeal [porridge] and water .
He reckoned that it staved off hunger for at least another 2 hours .
I tried it - tasted like shit .
Try another stove that will simmer .
A thicker bottomed pan.
Eat bacon .
Toast and marmalade .
I dunno

Find the bear's cottage in the woods ,sneak in and eat the little guy's porridge !

The only way to eat porridge is with muscadavo sugar .

as soon as it comes to teh boil, take it off the heat, and store the pan with lid on and the ensemble insulated for 5 mins.. ( wrap in towel? hay ? )

Instant Oatmeal?

After dumping the oatmeal into the boiling water, wait only until it starts to bubble then turn the stove off. Works great with those Quaker Oats flavoured sachets since they're pretty much ready as soon as the the stuff hits hot water.

I found getting my Whisperlite to go from full-blast to a simmer is possible, but only with a lot of care & flame adjustment. MSR says:

"Can you simmer with an MSR Stove?

There are two effective ways to simmer with your MSR stove. The most efficient way is to run the stove with extremely low pressure in the fuel bottle. One pump stroke in a half full bottle is optimal. Another way is to put a "burner plate" on top of the stove. This will diffuse the heat before it hits the pot. You can purchase one at your local outdoor store or or you can use the metal lid from a coffee can (the big ones).

Note: our award-winning DragonFly stove has a fully adjustable flame, which makes simmering a breeze."

Oatmeal breakfast of gods

Boil the water(with rasins if you like) then dump into one of those larger travel mugs made for coffee while driving. At this point add old fashioned oatmeal (not the instant or packets, too much surgar) while stirring till you get the consistancy you like. Put on the cup lid and let the boiling water do its thing. At this point I like to douse it with fruit juice (easier to keep than cream) the fruit juice is also a natural sweetener....and enjoy a healthy long lasting breakfast. After you finish the oatmeal rinse out the cup and wander around the campground till you smell fresh brewing coffee....hold the cup in a slightly shaky hand till someone invites you to a cup of eye opener.
