coleman stove/model 400 499
 

does anyone have experiance of this stove ,ive been told there great stoves, allso are they multi fuel ie petrol and coleman fuel,as ive been offerede one cheapish , well cheaper than new ,if this question has been asked before , a simple yes or no is ok

Ive had a coleman stove for nearly 10years. Im not sure what model number it is as the labels/paint have completely worn off.
Its a multi fuel model, I just use petrol out of my bike, saves having to carry anything else.

Its been fantastic, robust and efficient.
Ive been on 4 lengthy trips (7months +) in that time and have used it A LOT.

I havent cleaned it nor serviced it once.

It burns clean once warmed up and the flame is more adjustable than anyother stove Ive seen. Most are on or off.
My coleman can simmer for hours on a low flame, very important for cooking rice well.

Reccommended.

Coleman makes a good stove for the price. I have 4 one dating from the 1950s I dont use it much but it still works. I have used them from death valley at -50 feet or so to the top of mountain pass at 11,000 feet from 110+f to -20 f. The 400-499 is a feather light I think I have a 442 (found after a HU meeting) that is vary much like the 400 it works grate. But with most all the feather light stoves the little legs are a weak point and I cant see why they made a stove with them. The Coleman 533 on the other hand has no legs and is a bit more stable and a more robust base.

Both will do the job but price them both.

We purchased our Coleman in the USA in 1997 after experiencing difficulty obtaining GAZ pods. Currently on our 2nd RTW. Hours use would be high triple digits. Fuel used leaded!! and unleaded petrol only.
Despite this the unit runs very clean with no sooting

Contacted Coleman in USA when purchased who advised the generator pipe would clog if only gasoline was used and to carry a spare. This happened a couple of times but the remedy was simple.One cap of carburetor/fuel injector cleaner every two hundred uses. The remainder went into the bike tank.

Repairs in this time 2 generators. Both damaged in crashes. Plus the rubber diaphram on pumper replaced with an oiled leather type. Value for dollar IMHO and we have converted many travellers to this stove from other more expensive well known brands of cooker.

I too have a really old coleman stove fed from petrol out the bike, be it pre mixed 2 stroke or plain old petrol, it works like a dream, mind you i always light it well away from the tent or small furry animals

Just got a 422 from here after trying to decide between it and it's bigger brother the 533. I'm glad I opted for the smaller one. It's about half the weight and a veritable rocket engine once it's warmed up. I could probably use a wok on it!:cool4:

Only downside for me personally was, I found it slightly fiddly filling it up. I kind of jammed a funnel in the spout, which made it hard for me to tell when it's full. I've now brought an old 'Trangia' fuel bottle into play (the red one with the screw down button tap) and it's now much easier (and cleaner) to fill the stove. No stinking of petrol on my hands just before cooking.

It feels like an old friend already. I'm looking forward to using it in Europe over the next few weeks.
