" have zero clothing..." ,...?Oh come now you surely aren riding around buck nekkid ?
But seriously... what ever you are wearing now will serve well enough for anyplace into Mexico and CA.All you really need is a mesh jacket a wind & waterproof shell or liner ( shell is better) , jeans, helmet, some sturdy shoes , a rain suit ,good gloves , fleece pants and a sweater or two . .Make it multi functional, layers that can be added or shed as you go from cool to hot, high altitude to low, items that can work well while off the bike.
In CA you will not encounter the extreme cold of the high Andes and in Mexico stay away from the northern high country and mountains in winter if there is a cold weather system in force .You can alter your route in SA if the temp does threaten to freeze you to death.
Try going slow on the clothing procurement untill you can sample some clothes and opinions and consider what you really need or like. No need to jump right into the deep end and spend a fortune in one swoop on al manner of colour coordinated high tech , limited use bike clothing.

In my opinion the most beautiful places are the coldest so I would definitely buy some proper gear, perhaps dri-rider if it is available in the U.S.A (it's an aussie brand).

My dri-rider rallycross was great because you can take out the liner and it is a mesh jacket and the pants have zips to let air in, used it to travel through the atacama desert and also used it around northern bolivia and southern peru where it gets friggin cold.

If you don't have dri-rider there perhaps search for an equivelant.

Also the alpaca wool clothes make fantastic under-layers for staying warm and they're really cheap too.

Warm & waterproof gloves are absolutely essential, I had a pair with a thermal lining but my thumb still froze when riding from La Paz to Coroico because of the oncoming wind.

Bringing this thread to life.

I have been asking myself the same guestion for the last couple of months and have been doing research untill my head was spinning! I need some input on this one.

My main goal/issue is safety/protection. So far I have been thinking of gear without liners or gore-tex to have as much airflow as possible for the tropics and to wear (casual) clothing underneed when cold. I'm thinking of using a rainsuit (frogg toggs).

Jacket and pants when I stretch my budget: Klim (traverse/lattitude/dakar), motoport (ultra 2 stretch/mesh), aerostich (darien), bmw (rallye 3), etc.

Jackets and pants that I'm curious about if it would be worth the $$$$$$$$: clover (tekno) and rukka (armas)

Armor; D3o, T-pro, etc.

Boots: sidi crossfire or adventure.

I will be starting my trip in the USA so I will be able to buy the needed gear in the US or in Holland.

I know that there will not be one answer but all info will be appreciated.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
