Question Buffalo Systems?
Does anyone have any experience using any of these products?

British made, Buffalo Systems outdoor performance pile and pertex clothing and sleeping bags for mountaineering, hill walking, climbing, ice climbing, mountain biking, cycling and general outdoor pursuits

Not used the jackets or trousers (have a pair of mitts as spare winter gloves), but my climbing mate and mountain rescue team member swears by it - as long as you use it right.....very warm, quick drying and uber windproof.

I had a jacket with side zips for venting and a crotch strap if you wanted when (push)bike riding which was lovely in northern england cold wet conditions, despite not being their heaviest weight material. It worked better with nothing on under it.
I also have a 4 season buffalo pile sleeping bag, which is two seperate (2 season?) bags each with a top, as opposed to a side, zip. The outer one has a pertex outer shell, a snug hood and zips each side to poke your arms out, which you then zip up again for toasty draft free coffee making in your tent. You could unzip the bottom to let your feet out, then you can wear your bag walking around arms and legs free, before bed
It is warm when damp, it doesn't care how dirty it is, it feels lovely on your skin, but is bulky and heavier than other bags and won't hardly compress. Mine is now 20years old, and not far off as warm as new.

I use a buffalo jacket for both hill walking and sometimes on the bike. They are excellent if used and fitted properly. Make sure its a fairly snug fit, wear nothing underneath it when walking, cycling etc, works far better and this is how its designed to work you do not need a rain coat or overtop jacket for these pastimes. However it is designed to keep you warm when you are generating your own heat - eg exercising walking and so on, They do a warmer version designed for instructors and for use when your use involves standing still for longer periods - this is the one I have as I thought it would be more suitable for use on the bike. It is very very warm but quite bulky. For walking,canoeing or cycling its a superb top. For the bike it is still pretty good but not as efficient as some other systems.

I have used buffalo jackets and agree with all of the above. They are a little pricey however, some of the Military kit companies such as Arktis and survival aids used to make their own version.

May be limited to green or black but save some pennies.

Ive used the Buffalo Special Six shirt/trs/mitt/hood in some incredibly cold areas and they performed to an exceptional degree.Warm as hell when stood around doing nothing or riding, but you have to make full use of the ventialtion zips/vents when doing any physical work due to the massive heat build up.

Pros

Robust, insulate when wet through,easy to handclean and very,very warm.

Cons

Need to keep them well washed if with other people as the clothes can stink due to they way they process sweat....and they can be too warm unless used for extreme weather.Do not compact well...very bulky.


The correct way to wear these things by design is to wear nothing but the buffalo system itself....The shirt is worn directly against your naked skin for the best insualtion and wicking, the same with the trousers....however a high wicking set of underwear is best for hygiene here.

But I have used them with windproof over garments and under goretex bike gear with no problems at all.

All in all, highly suggest you give them a try if your going somewhere freezing.
