Best 2/3 man tent

Looking to buy a two to three man tent. Wanting it for the event in May, a two week walking holiday in the Shetland Islands in June but most importantly for when we do our massive trip. We plan to be gone for 3-4 years but are wanting the option to sleep outdoors in the summer as opposed to the vehicle at times. Theres so much choice we nref some recommendations. Having room to cook or another room to put stuff in would br good.

Also can you buy double sleeping bags? What type of equipment is essential?

Hi LandJ,

Id search the thread for tent info, this subject has been beaten to death over the years, if you want an accurate answer, put more detail into your question, such as:

-max weight - do you have to carry it hiking too or just throw it in the back of a vehicle?
-how many season use?
-whats your budget?

everyone has ideas about the 'perfect' tent, for some a $15 tent from a superstore is perfect, for some a $1000 Hilleberg is best, what do YOU want from the tent ?

Its also good to say where you are in the world, I take it you are in the UK? take a moment to fill in your location within your profile (so it appears in the top right corner of your post) and people will know which market you are buying stuff in and can advise you accordingly.

For a vehicle/camper based trip you should be able to find some zip together sleeping bags fairly cheaply in the UK, take some blankets and some thermarest style pads for the tent.

Dont get bogged down with this stuff as yet, decide what vehicle you want to use first, then see how much space you have and then buy equipment to fit your vehicle - you may get some equipment with the vehicle you buy - dont take too much crap, keep things simple.

Thanks for the reply Gipper. We are in London...will update that after this.

We really want something that has seperate sleeping space so we can be a little organised! When we are on our big trip, we will only be using it if we fancy it in the summer somewhere.

When we first use it it will be when we are at the HUNN event and then for 2 weeks every day in June when we are in the Shetland Isles.

I wouldn't want to spend more than £100-150?

Any ideas? Thank you

Hi LanJ,

If you can stretch your budget a little, have a look at what Vango have to offer.

Link here: Tents | Trekking

I'd suggest the Halo or maybe the Omega if you want more space. Both have alloy poles and the Omega has the tension band system to keep it stable if it gets breezy, as I believe it can do, in tree-less Shetland..!

I've got more than one Vango tent and for the money I think they're hard to beat.

As Gipper says, there are loads of threads in this very forum about all aspects of tents - actually you can get overwhelmed with the breadth of opinions.
Here are the most recent ones:-

Vangos are discussed in there also, a bit further back in the chronology.

I've got a Coleman by the way.

Hi,

Ì used the 50 Euro High Peak Texel 3 Tent every day while traveling around africa for two years and to travel around Southamerica. This tent can stand without pegs, has a malaria net and is very and fast and easy to pitch:

consider taking a tarp with some collapsible poles. Lots of uses. Mainly keeping you dry but also good shade when no other is available. It gives you great outside space especially with a small tent. You'll see plenty being used at the HUBB I suspect in a few days!
