How good is good?

I am looking throught the throusands of different tents on the internet for a trip across africa, east coast, and prohaps back up west side. I liked the look of the Vaude Hogan, but what puts me off it is that it can not be pitched with out the fly sheet for those hot nights looking up at the stars. I have found this tent which looks as through it is what I am looking for. However when compairing the materails used in its construction they are different. Unfortuantly how different I don't know below are the materails for the american tent

Big Agnes Seedhouse 2 3-season tent

Fly: 40D nylon rip-stop with a silicone treatment and 1200mm waterproof polyurethane coating
Canopy: 40D nylon mesh
Floor: seamless 70D 190T nylon, 1500mm waterproof coating
Poles: super light, Yunan-8.5 mm hub/pole system.

The Hogan is made of
outer canvas: 75D Polyester 185T PU coated 5.000 mm
Innertent: 70D POlyamid Ripstop 210T
Floor: 70D Polyamid 210T Premium PU coated 10.000 mm
rods: Al 7001 T6; 11mm / 10,2mm
so what is the difference between 40D and 75D nylon?, 1200mm and 5000mm polyurethane .

They hogan is a mountain tent and I am going to africa, so my requirments are not the same. But at the same time I don't want it to fall apart after a month!

I hope there is some one out there with this knowledge who wants to share it with me!

Thanks alot George

Hi George,

The "D" refers to "Denier" (as used commonly for ladies stockings, or it used to be). The bigger the number the thicker the material:-

Units of textile measurement - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The other numbers refer to testing of water pressure or head of water. e.g. 1500mm means that it has been tested to retain 1.5m depth of water without leaking (or at least not leaking within the time frame of the test?) - those are the basics as I have known them!

Don't you love tents; so much choice!!!
Good luck with your choosing process.

Dave

I can vouch for the durability of the Hogan, its a tough tent.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
