White Power Shock?
 

I've fitted a White Power Shock and fork springs to my '89 R100GS.The new set up seems much harder than I anticipated but feels good 2-up.We're travelling to Morocco in September so I felt it was time to Upgrade. Can someone give me a few Tips on the right setting for solo riding as it seems lethal on bumpy roads even fully damped.Do you need seperate Solo and Touring springs?Or do I need to ride round with panniers full of sand when I go out on my own?!

Don't know about the forks, but according to HPN:

"you should adjust the spring preload that the bike, with normal riding weight, sinks in one third of the total travel of the rear suspension"

Too much preload will increase the ride height and put too much of an angle on the drive shaft UJ increasing the possibility of wear/failure.

With the preload set, adjust the damping to the mid-way settings and work from there.

WP rear shock works fine on my 93 GS for solo loaded/unloaded although I do wind the preload in/out if I'm doing long distances.

Thanks for advice..Funny you should say about too much pre-load;the rubber boot between shaft drive and rear'wheel'has already split and I reckon that must have been due to the angle.

I'll reset it this weekend and see how it feels.

I did have my front forks modified by maxton, they had new springs wound and manufactured new internals with damping in each leg, unlike the standard setup. Cost was about £250 but well worth it as it gives a very nice ride even when the Acerbis 43L tank is full. Much, much better than my friends otherwise identical bike.

Only downsides so far is that the springs rattle a bit in the stanchions if extended over bumps (they told me this would happen) and that I can get some patter over ripples during full on braking. Maxton told me to add some more fork oil to stop it hitting the bump stops to cure this, but I haven't bothered yet 1 year later on, so it's obviously not that bad.

Basically this and the WP shock have transformed the bike enough to panic a few sports bikes at least in slow twisty bits.

Other good stuff:

Lowered touratech foot pegs are more comfortable for long legs.
'Flip a lever' cruise control, side stand fixer and fat foot from http://www.schneidersinc.com/ are brill!

I also plan to get one of the modified K series brake calipers which motobins supply as I believe this improves the noticably absent OEM braking.
