what oil do u recomend for r850r 04
 

Hi what oil would you recomend for the engine of my r850r i used castrol power 1 last time but have seen a post that says dont use oil with a api sj rating which this is .would castrol act>evo 10/40 mineral oil be any good what do you use in yours thanks Rob

This is a topic that usually results in lots of response... all have opinions(!)...

Get hold of a Briggs and Stratton one cylinder workshopmanual. Mine have part.no. 271313-12/00 but that is in Swedish.
Read the small section on oil/lubrication/service. It is the best presentation of an answer to your question that I have ever seen or heard :)

I like and prefer Omega Lubrication - special oils for heavy duty machinery. "pay through the nose" prices mind you...

The text I did write contained these data:
757 15W/40 for temps less than 35/40'C.
757 20W/50 for temps that goes higher than 35/40'C
690 80W/90 in the transmission.

Quaker State 20W/50 and 75W/90 mineral is an option to me.

...and that is a cheap fully synthetic oil... I do not like synthetic nor semi-synthetic oils... I planned to flush my R80 engine, still not gotten around to finnish the flushing...

In Europe I now use 10W-40 or 10W-50 as there are often temperatures less than -10 degrees C.

Usually in Oz I go with synthetic 20W-40 and this is enough for most riding conditions.

Any premium engine oil will work fine. Just change it frequently.

Premium engine oil begins to sublimate after 2500 miles leaving a varnish inside the engine.

With a synthetic you can usually safely go 5000 miles between changes.

It's a subjective question but IF you don't ride like a Loon then 20W50 is perfectly suitable AND the motor will run quieter

10 W 40 and synthetics will find thier way past seals in an older bike giving you the apperance off oil leaks

My Qualifications for the above = No University degrees just an ex Motorrrad mechanic and small independant workshop now

P.S. Service intervals are 6000 miles for oil and filter and 12,000 for Sparkplugs, Airfilter, transmission oil and final drive and 24,00o for fuel filters Alternator drive belts are 32,000 (which is odd because the service is at 30,000 ?? Valve clearances I do every service and then reset the throttles

Each oil comes in different grades and weighs.So First of all check your user's manual to find the type of oil recommended by your bike's manufacturer.I would suggest a synthetic oil for modern bikes since it holds all oil’s properties much better than a natural oil. A specific oil isn't always the best motorcycle oil and may not be worth the extra investment.
