water crossings
 
Hi im currently on a trip in Arnhem Land on an r80g/s I had to cross 5 rivers up to the sparkplugs water level,Ive just changed the gearoil,finaldrive,beveloil all quite milky.Where is the water getting in,would putting a hose on the final drive breather up to the height of the seat help,or will I just have to change the oils again in a few days time.

Hi skits,
Water can get into your bevel drive through the breather. River water is usually quite cold (maybe even in Arnhem Land ) and this cools the bevel box contracting the air inside which in turn will suck water in . Not sure about your final drive but the gearbox also has a small breather which can do the same thing. Best not to spend too much time in the water.

Ditch the black plastic cap on the final drive breather, hoseclamp/jubilee clip a long length of stout hose to it (12mm internal diameter?) & route it up past the top shock mount so that it exits somewhere near the battery. Cable tie it to the frame, up to you if you fit a small filter to the hose end.

Fuel injection hose from a car accessory shop is ideal.

I assume that water gets in to the gearbox via the speedo drive? I think Grant's posted on this before?

Water enters the engine itself via the airbox snorkel, airbox & then the carbs.
