Exclamation Unleaded Fuel for R 80 ?

BMW R 80 GS uses leaded fuel (called also super somewhere).
What happens if I use unleaded fuel (95/98)?
Does it cause any problem or whatever?

It supposedly damages the valves as lead is needed to protect them. However, I ran my R65 for 10,000 km through India on unleaded petrol and the valves didn't budge.
