Slick 50 (gearbox)

I have a R100gs and have been recommended, by a few people, that the use of 'Slick 50' 'Manual gearbox additive' would improve operation and longevity. I wouldn't use an additive in the engine, but haven't heard anything bad about the use of the stuff in the gearbox. Does anyone have any experiance with this product?

Hi, I have used molyslip gearbox addative and PTFE addative in my R80 box and I find it makes the gear change noticably smoother. I also use addative in the engine every now and then and this also makes the engine feel much smoother. I always used to doubt the benefit of these addatives as modern oils have everything thats required but now personal experience says that they work.

What oil are you putting in the engine? Wally at CW's recommended that i use 20/50 Castrol GP - not exactly a modern oil, but it's not exactly a modern engine. Anything else burns off quite quickly, plus it does seem to run better on the thick stuff.

I actually had a brand new gearbox recently, and i still get the occassional gear change problem. Perhaps some of this magic additive might help?

20-50 is the CORRECT weight for an R100xx engine in 90% of the riding conditions you will encounter. See the manual for specifics, but that should be good down to around 5 degrees C and up as high as you care to ride. Around 40 degrees I think they recommend straight 50.

The gearbox needs around 10,000 miles to fully break in - in the meantime anything more slippery than the standard 80w-90 you put in it will slow down the break-in.

Give it time. It will NEVER shift as good as the best boxes out there, but with time and miles on it - and some experience for your foot - it will be just fine. A missed shift should be a VERY rare event.

Some form of moly once the box is broken in is probably good.
