Throttle play
 

Hi guy's,

This might sound a bit crazy but it's driving me crazy so I thought I'd better ask. I'm riding a 09 r1200 gsa. Some times it seems fine and some time it doesn't. It all seems to depend on the start. If it starts off fine it will remain so and be a pleasure to ride but if it starts off shit it stays that way too. When I mean shit, it pop's from the exhaust when decelerating and engine braking ( this doesn't bother me though). It's all the throttle play that's driving me crazy. If I'm riding in second it's almost unbearable every time you accelerate or decelerate. The thing is some times it fine some times it's not.
These bikes are suppose to be smooth but it's far from it. The throttle play isn't bad all the time but when it is, it pop's from the exhaust a lot more, almost constantly. First I thought I was imagining it but now I'm sure I'm not. Would anyone know how I can fix this or AM I imagining it.

I know some of you crazy's will be able to figure this out, your input is greatly appreciated.

Hi, i am no expert but i would check the throttle position sensors, usually located near the injectors although some bikes can have 2 or 3 sensors. you will need a good manual. Sorry i can't be of more help. Andy

Thanks for your reply. In the end I had to take it to bmw where they discovered after checking over the whole bike that my throttle cable was way too tight and there was no play at all which was screwing up the electronics.

But was this because the cable was pinching somewhere, ie. when the airfiter nossle was replaced was the throttle cable not seated properly or perhaps it was because the throttle cable was over adjusted, too tight at the handle bar, or something else entirely?

I ask because it would surprise me that the throttle cable was routed incorrectly or was the wrong length.

Also I notice quite regularly when my GS is hot that on deceleration the bike pops (not back firing), but this is because of the secondary plugs that fire on the exhaust sequence when the mixture going out is too rich, ie. there is a lot of unburnt fuel.

So it makes sense that your bike when it was running rich, with the throttle cable too tight that it would pop more frequently.
